      Hi all,
I know some time back there was aquestion on the usefullness of the MOOdle platfrom but I seem to have deleted some relevant replies.

As such, could I burden those MOOdlers to once again offer some info on the success and insucess of adopting MOOdle. Some case examples would be appreciated.

My institute here in Pportugal is very conservative and "traditionally" focused in nature but it is considering new approaches to learning particulary as the intake level of our night students i.e. working students has begun to drop sinificanlty over the last few years and I am attempting to persuade them that maybe it is time they broke out of their conservative shell before it is too late.

      Thanking you in advance.

        James,

I am absolutely no kind of expert on Moodle use and my experience of it is
limited to several online courses I've attended which have used it.

A criticism I have heard, though, is that it is very (conventional) and
course orientated and works best where users are going to be course
participants. I thought that very fact might be a good argument for you to
        present to your employers.

        Best wishes,

        Dennis

          Hi James and all,

Perhaps those of you interested in the use of Moodle in language teaching
would like to take this thread to either
          http://extremetechnoelt.com/moodle/mod/forum/view.php?id=11 (VLE technology)
          or http://extremetechnoelt.com/moodle/mod/forum/view.php?id=12 (VLE
pedagogy)? This is the sort of discussion which would be great to hold there
since that format (a web-based forum) will allow others with similar
questions in future to trawl through the discussion more easily. I'm not
trying to kill off the discussion here, just make it easier for everyone!

          Thanks

                    Hi
First I would like to thank everyone for their input.

                    In relation to Sophie's question:

Yes, the school should be happy that it is freeware, what school wouldn't be?

The idea behind all of this is the development of a blended learning environment that "could" assist our current and potential night students to be able to juggle their profesional/family and student lives better.

As I pointed out in a previous mail, we have had a sharp decline in our enrollments over the past two to three years which is worrying. Our amount of day students has also declined but this is principly due to a gap in the population growth which "should" correct itself in a few years time, considering the amount of students in late primary, early secondary schools at present.

It would be nice to be able to offer the night students the option to attend class once a month to iron out issues or to carrty out practical work, depending on the subject area. (we are a business school pertaining to the Poly of Coimbra) and provide the remaining syllabus through a CBL environment.

This year a large bulk of my teaching has been with night students so I have had the opportunity to discuss the matter with them and they like the idea. (What working student, would not?)

I should point out that I am not using the word "night students" lightly. They begin classes at 18:30 and finish at 24:00 yep that's midnight. I finish twice a week at 11:30pm (lucky me). Imagine trying to get a class of tired adults of varying levels to understand the difference betwen the GDP and GNP at 11pm. It's challenging.

Anyhow, I won't bore you, so I'll finish here.

Should you require any further info or have pointers to offer please don't hesitate to write.

                    regards
                    James

                        Hi James

It sounds like Moodle can help you out. It does offer an area where
the students can log on and carry out acitivites which you have
assigned and uploaded or they can follow instructions for assignments
etc. which they can carry out using other resources on the Net or
elesewhere and then submit them to you.

They can also communicate with each other and work collaboratively on
various projects. MOOdle offers a forum and other communication tools.

You can also upload Hot Potatoes activities and receive feedback as to
how the students used them and how successful they were in their
                        efforts.

There is of course the question of supplying the content....

                        Smiles

James, your students might like to try my International Writing Exchange
(IWE), which uses Moodle as the learning environment. There we have a
six-week structured course where upper intermediate to advanced global
students (mainly undergraduates) supply the bulk of the content by
writing and speaking to each other on all kinds of topics, ending with a
final IWE culture report. Our next course (Round 50) runs from 22nd May
                          06 to 2nd July 06.

All teachers, teacher trainees and EFL/ESL students are welcome to take
a look at our current round (49) at www.writeit.to/sys. Registration is
free. Write to me off-list for more information.

                          Greetings from sunny Finland:-)

                            Hi!

Can any Moodle guru please help me with a registration problem. Now, for
the second time this year, I have a student receiving this kind of
message from the system: ""Your registration has not yet been confirmed","

I'm copying and pasting the message I received from my Argentinian
partner, Rita Z, (some of you know her!)with the login problem. About 2
month ago a student in Kora had the same problem. The Korean created
several addresses, but none of them were confirmed.

"Today a student of mine, Bianca Palagonia (bianky_06@...), told
me last week she opened her account at your moodle, but never got her
confirmation of registration. In fact, when she wants to log in using
the data she sent, a sign tells her "Your registration has not yet been
confirmed", and she cannot open a new account either, for she's told her
email address has been taken... "

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Hi Ruth, When we had similar problems, in most cases it was because the confirmation email which is sent out by moodle was filtered out by anti-spam filters.

                                Hi Ruth,

When we had similar problems, in most cases it was because the
confirmation email which is sent out by moodle was filtered out by
anti-spam filters. If the email does not reach the student, s/he cannot
confirm the creation of the account. However, another account with the
same email address can't be created, because it already exists in
                                moodle's database (although un-confirmed).

Whenever this happened, we simply confirmed the account manually for the
                                student.

                                Hope this helps,
                                Przemek Stencel
