      BRITISH COUNCIL SEARCHENGLISH Update

Just a quick update to let you know about the latest new articles on

DEFINITION PLUS COLLOCATION IN VOCABULARY TEACHING AND LEARNING
Definition is concerned with establishing a single word's meaning, whereas
collocation takes definition for granted and is concerned with the words
that typically appear with any particular word: the verbs that might occur
with a noun, for example. Such collocational information often enables a
      word to be used.

ANALYSING A SUCCESSFUL LANGUAGE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
On a trip home to California via London this summer my seatmate was a lovely
young woman from Australia, a special education teacher who worked with deaf
children. As I have always wanted to learn to sign, I asked her if she would
teach me to say some things.

A FRESH LOOK AT TEAM TEACHING
The notion of team teaching has been bandied about for some time now - it
has enjoyed brief periods of interest since the nineteen sixties in various
teaching situations - and yet few, if any, of the handbooks currently used
in EFL make any but passing reference to it

TEACHING SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION COURSES: VIEWS FROM NEW FACULTY
While there has been recent interest in exploring the interfaces of second
language acquisition research and classroom teaching, the teaching of SLA
courses at the university level is little studied. This report describes a
faculty-initiated self reflection and development program

THE EDUCATIONAL SEMANTIC WEB: VISIONING AND PRACTICING THE FUTURE OF
      EDUCATION
The "Semantic Web" is a term coined by Tim Berners-Lee to refer to a vision
of the next dramatic evolution of web technology. .Semantic Web based
applications are being developed in all disciplines and professions,
      including education.

WORD WALL "ACTIVE-ITIES" BUILD VOCABULARY, SPELLING AND WRITING SKILLS
A classroom word wall has many uses. A wide variety of activities and games
can be used to help reinforce vocabulary words that appear on the wall.

FACULTY SELF-STUDY RESEARCH PROJECT: EXAMINING THE ONLINE WORKLOAD
Concerns about faculty workload in the online environment are a reported
deterrent to participation in online teaching. To date, such concerns have
been based primarily on anecdotal evidence rather than empirical research.

DISTANCE EDUCATION STRATEGY: MENTAL MODELS AND STRATEGIC CHOICES
What issues do distance education (DE) leaders believe will influence the
future of DE? What are their colleges' DE strategies? This qualitative study
compares DE strategic thinking and strategic choices at three community
      colleges.

BEYOND SAY, SEE, DO TEACHING: EXPLOITING STRUCTURED PRACTICE
"Is it possible to teach a lesson so effectively that the need for
      corrective feedback is nearly eliminated?"
