Adhan, prayer focus
- Adhan, prayer focus
Please share anything you have regarding maintaining one's focus
while making salat. How best to approach it in the scientific arena
the concept of Darwinism. I'm a science major and this topic comes
up often in my studies and with my instructors.
Imam W.D. Mohammed:
That's the same question, right? Approaching salat you don't need
Darwinism, all you need is to obey what the salat asks of us. Before
salat there is adhan and the adhan comes from the word ear and it
means that you are supposed to give your attention to this higher
cause and higher purpose that is obedience to G-d, that is the
higher cause and higher purpose. So it is named adhan to say your
attention is called to your salat, your prayer to the worship of G-
d. And give an ear, this is in scripture, hear the word of G-d, this
is in scriptures before Quran, give an ear, hear the word of G-d.
So if you don't make a conscious effort to keep your attention on
your salat then you lose the value of salat. That's the key, keep
your attention on the salat. And the words "Bismillaher rahmaaner
Raheem" Allahu Akbar, listen to what you're saying. Keep your mind
and ear on what you're saying.
Allah (swt) says, "There are those who join the prayer just to be
seen," but they are not really conscious of their prayers. So don't
be that kind of person, be attentive 100%, completely, having your
ears and your thinking with what you are saying, what you are
reciting, that is your protection. If you do that you will have no
problem. Everyone of us have to do that. Even though I have done
this now for over 50 yrs, praying the way we pray in Al Islam and
keeping my mind on my prayer, occasionally 1 have to catch myself.
Thoughts from outside are coming in my mind so I have to catch
myself and the best result that I have is from keeping my ear, my
attention on every word of the prayer, be conscious of every word of
Don't recite it as something that you remembered, recite it as
something that you are refreshing your mind with, you are bringing
it to your mind again and you are being conscious of every word of G-
d. Because that's what the prayer is, the word of G-d. When we do
salat we are not having our words we are not even having Muhammad's
(pbuh) words, we're only having the words of G-d. So understand that
the prayer is the won of Allah (swt), and give it that respect and
hear every word you are saying.
