Group Description

A place where the interests of all creations are given equal consideration and where humans can learn to live more in harmony with the rest of nature.

STEWARDSHIP DEMONSTRATIONS
Area landowners interested in protecting and enhancing the health and beauty of their properties are invited to observe sustainable land stewardship practices at the Center.

Protecting Rural Lands. The Tibbits Farm was the first in Michigan to be protected by gift of a conservation easement to the American Farmland Trust.

Encouraging Biodiversity. Demonstrations underway include wetland restoration, reforestation, habitat creation, and ecological pond management.

Organic Gardening & Farming. Permaculture design principles are used to create a place of peace, plenty, beauty, and solitude. The gardening demonstrations include a perennial garden for herbs, flowers, fruits, and hearty vegetables, a woodland garden, and an island meditation garden. Two organic farming field trials of beans, rye and clover are in progress.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Opportunities are available to experience the Land Stewardship Center as an active learner.

Internships. Interns are given the chance to learn and apply practical land stewardship skills on an ongoing basis. This is an ideal program for college students seeking hands-on experience. An intern may spend one week or an entire growing season at the Center.

Courses and Workshops. Interested groups can arrange for courses and workshops in organic gardening, permaculture, sustainable living, and nature appreciation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Center needs volunteers to assist with ongoing projects and to create new demonstrations. Volunteers vary from the Master Gardener to youth groups.

TOURS AND VISITS

Everyone is welcome to call and arrange a visit. The Center's pavilion can be used for meetings, workshops, retreats, and other activities sponsored by community groups. For more information call 810-793-5303
