Paul Rudd and Romany Malco are very funny in this fish-out-of-
water comedy about two brothers who inherit a French chateau
with a household staff and all the debt that goes with it.
It boasts the Gallic star Sylvie Testud - heads towards its
tricky resolution with a quirky mix of pratfalls and poignance.

Fans of French cinema - and fans of les femmes of French cinema

Firmine Richard and Ludivine Sagnier. Albany Twin/Albany

On paper, "Chocolat" sounds like the perfect prescription for PMS.
Take one dose of Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, a quaint French
town and a story line revolving around the magical properties of
chocolate and call me in the morning. But instead of being a
hedonistic chick flick for the ages, "Chocolat" is a sweet if rather
tedious fable about acceptance and tolerance. It's treacle, not
chocolate.(Mary F. Pols, Contra Costa Times).Rafael Film Center/San Rafael
Merci Pour le Chocolat
Thank heaven for Claude Chabrol. The veteran French filmmaker
whose career spans an amazing five decades and includes
``Le Boucher'' (1969) and ``L'Enfer'' (1994) -- specializes in the
kind of muted Hitchcockian thriller that rarely gets made anymore.
Chabrol's suspense isn't synthetically manufactured with shadows
and screaming violins; it evolves naturally from plot and character,
and is all the more unnerving for it. Balboa Theatre / San Francisco
