Proposed restrictions on cycle access on SouthWest Trains
- Dear Lambeth Cyclists,
SouthWest trains are planning to hugely reduce their service for cyclists.
Please consider the following and do reply to the consultation:
Proposed changes by SouthWest Trains are reported to impose more
restrictions on the ability to take a bike on trains, including early and
reverse-flow services where fewer than 10% of the seats are filled.
SOUTHWEST TRAINS' PROPOSALS MEAN THAT IF YOU CURRENTLY COMMUTE 'AGAINST THE
FLOW' WITH YOUR BICYCLE FROM, SAY, CLAPHAM JUNCTION TO FELTHAM, YOU WILL NO
LONGER BE ABLE TO DO SO.
The 'cyclists' survey taking place at this time fails to include those who
park at one or both ends of their journey, and those who have been forced
into using folding bikes.
If you count up the number of bikes parked at Waterloo by incoming
commuters, and multiply by a typical season ticket fare, the parked bikes
represent at least 0.5 million worth of ticket sales. When added to the
equal number of bikes still arriving on the trains, and the similar masses
of bikes parked at major stations like Woking, it shows just how significant
the cycling commuter is to SouthWest Trains.
Cyclists, in your own interest, please do fill in the reply paid forms, and
if you don't actually take the bike on the train (or have been forced to
park or get a folding bike) just add an extra response box to let SW Trains
know that they have a far bigger number of bike & train travellers than they
*You can pick up a form from any local SWT staffed station*
e.g. Clapham Junction, Wandsworth Town, Putney, Wimbledon, Waterloo.
Deadline for responses is Wednesday 21 July.
