Group Description

Lake Cunningham Volunteers is a community-based group in San Jose, CA. Its mission is to enhance the environment at Lake Cunningham Park by removing invasive plants and planting California native wildflowers, perennials, and shrubs; to provide summer shade through native tree planting; to encourage community participation; to create a sustainable, low-maintenance landscape; to enhance nature-based recreation; and to create wildlife habitat.

Volunteers are welcome at the 1-acre California Native Garden and nursery. Tasks include weeding invasive plants, mulching, watering, propagation, and planting. No prior experience necessary. Earn community service hours by working outdoors near the lakeside.

DATE: Saturdays

TIME: Hours: 9 am to 12 noon

PLACE: Lake Cunningham Regional Park, 2305 S. White Road, San Jose, California

WHAT TO BRING: Wear layers, closed-toe shoes, hat. Bring water, sunblock, garden gloves, weeding tools.

DIRECTIONS: At the entrance kiosk, identify yourself as a native garden volunteer and your parking fee will be waived.

FROM TULLY RD ENTRANCE, turn right at kiosk, go ¼ mile, and park in dirt parking lot on left (has portable toilet).

FROM WHITE RD ENTRANCE, turn left after kiosk, go ¾ mile, past skate park, then park in dirt parking lot on right (has portable toilet).

Meet at interpretive sign titled "A Native Garden". If you get lost, ask park rangers or entrance kiosk personnel for directions to the Native Garden.
