CSULB THEATRE ARTS BEGINS 2014-2015 AFFINITY SERIES WITH OUT OF ORBIT READING NEW PLAY READING IN SUPPORT OF UPCOMING SPRING CAL REP PRODUCTION
Long Beach, CA, AUGUST 2014— As part of its Affinity Series initiative, the CSULB Theatre Arts department is proud to announce a reading of Out of Orbit, written by Jennifer Maisel. The public reading, which will be presented on September
30th at 7 pm in the Theatre Arts building on the CSULB campus, is an opportunity to hear the play that will be fully produced next Spring by California Repertory Company, from April 17th through May 9th in the Royal Theatre on the Queen Mary. Out of Orbit is an exciting and moving new play about a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and her struggle to connect with her daughter across space and time.
The reading will feature graduate and undergraduate Theatre Arts students. The playwright, Jennifer Maisel, and the production’s director, Lindsay Allbaugh, will be present for the reading, and will engage the audience in a post-reading moderated talkback. This talkback will offer the audience a chance to gain insight into the playwright’s intentions, provide feedback, and get a taste for what will become an exciting and fully-executed production. This event gives participants the unique opportunity to experience the play at both the beginning and end of its production process, and to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which scripts change and grow during development.
With the Affinity Series, CSULB has committed to presenting a series of performances, presentations, and panel eventscelebrating engagement on diverse, timely, and important social issues with our local and global communities. The 2014- 2015 Affinity Series season will also include a performance on Saturday, November 8th in the University Theatre by the Upright Citizens Brigade, a nationally-recognized comedy group dedicated to fostering both an appreciation and education of the arts through affordable and high quality comedic performances and classes. This year’s Affinity Series will conclude with Sparking Curiosity, a collaboration with the Carpenter Performing Arts Center’s Arts for Life series that will be performed at CPAC on May 4 at 7pm. Led by Theatre Arts faculty member Andrea Caban, CSULB Department of Theatre Arts students and local high school students will study the process of creating documentary theatre through an exploration of community issues in Long Beach, interviewing residents from both a personal and historical perspective. This project is a continuation of the immensely successful Questions for My Mother/Questions My Mother Can’t Answer presentation in last year’s Series.
