Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski on his two-day working visit to
Ukraine met with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Odessa, where the two
heads of state discussed preparations to ceremonies commemorating the 60th
anniversary of a series of massacres during WW2 when thousands of Poles
living in what is now western Ukraine were murdered by Ukrainian
Mr.Kwasniewski said that the commemorative events were first of all to serve
Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation and to be homage paid to truth and to the
victims. The massacres have cast a shadow over Polish-Ukrainian relations,
similarly to the ethnic cleansing of Polish-Ukrainians after WW 2 , when
thousands were forced to leave their homes and settle elsewhere in Poland.
President Alexander Kwasniewski has expressed regret at the resettlement
action. The two sides have agreed on the programme of the commemorations in
Ukraine, planned for July 11th.
