Until 1945 when recruitment was halted about 26 830 Polish soldiers were declared dead, missing or died of wounds. After that date, added 21 000 Polish prisoners of war.
The first military action of the Polish Navy (PMW) took place in 1939 during the defense of the coast . Some Polish ships were withdrawn from the Baltic Sea to Great Britain before the outbreak of war. During World War II in the PMW consisted of a total of 27 vessels (two cruisers, nine destroyers, five submarines and 11 torpedo boats), who had a total of 1.2 million nautical miles , escorted 787 convoys. Ships PMW conducted 1,162 patrols and military operations, sunk 12 enemy ships (including 5 submarines) and 41 merchant vessels, damaged 24 ships (including eight submarines) and shot down 20 enemy aircraft. 450 sailors from more than four thousand serving in the Navy lost their lives in combat   .
