I bought this book today after learning about its publication from
messages to the list.
Although the author states in the introduction that the book doesn't
do justice to the story of "special exiles" like the Polish citizens
deported to the Soviet Union between 1940 and 1941, chapters 20 and
21 do cover the Polish deportations, the fate of the deportees in the
USSR, the "amnesty", the formation of the Anders army and its
subsequent departure for Persia in a fair amount of detail (although
Applebaum mistakenly states that the evacuation of 120000 military
personnel and civilians to Persia in 1942 was carried out by train).
Among the many photos in the book there are a couple of Polish
children who were vitims of the deportations.
Based on what I've read so far I'd strongly recommend it.
