What you quoted about the Battle of Ancona is true. I remember it vividly. Thanks to gen. Anders' commanding talent the city was taken intact. What happened was this: before the battle, there was great action taken to deceive the Germans. They were expecting that the main line of atack will be along the main road , La Strada del Sole, along the Adriatic coast and they groupped most of their armoured and anti-tank forces there. But gen. Anders planned the main attack about 15-20 km. inland around Castelfidardo and Osimo. To deceive the Germans all fake signs were indicating location of our panzer regiments along the coast . Instead, couple of days before the battle, our tanks were groupped in the area of Castelfidardo, they came at night, camouflaged themselves, and waited. Then on July 17, 1944, the whole field moved to attack. The Carpathian Lancers Regt. ( Pulk Ulanow Karpackich) did some fighting along the coast but the main action was in the area
of Castelfidardo and Osimo. Germas were taken completely by surprise. Our victory was competely. Our tanks surrounded Ancona and as a result the town and what was nmore important the port was taken intact.
Have a nice day
