First, my grandfather's second wife and her family was among those deported. I found them listed on the Index of Victims of Soviet Repression www.indeks.karta.org.pl website. They were apparently deported from near Wilno on February 24, 1940 to Arkangielsk and released September 3, 1941 in Stalingrad. I remember being told that several members of the family were lined up against a wall and shot by the Nazis, including her husband, and others then deported again for forced labor. I have recently learned that there was another cousin who survived and lived in Russia, but I don't have details about her yet. My grandfather then sponsored his cousin to come to America. My grandfather later married her. Meanwhile, her son
joined the British Army and stayed in until the Korean War. He then was permitted to leave the British Army and join the American Army. He then taught at the Monterrey language school, got his GED, and later went to college in Los Angeles under the GI Bill. He lived the rest of his life in California. He died about 5 years ago. In telling his life story at the funeral, the time 1939-1948 was omitted.
The second connection is even more tenuous. I recall hearing a story about another of my mother's cousins in Poland who was in the Polish Army when he was taken prisoner. He was forced to dig graves for murdered Polish officers. He later returned to Poland with Berling's Army, stayed in the Polish Army, becoming an intelligence officer. In 1959, he spoke out about the murders of Polish officers by the Soviets saying that he had seen some of those murdered. A "shoot on sight" order was issued and he spent the rest of his life in hiding, though with help from family. He was still alive until the mid-1970s, but I never was able to meet him.
