Thanks, Lucyna - nice timing as I'm right in the middle of The Mermaid and the Messerschmidt, documenting Warsaw at the beginning of the war.
Just as an aside, this journal is decidedly different from the last war journal I read called A Woman in Berlin. In that book, virtually all the Russian soldiers were brutalizing/terrorizing the women. The Mermaid presents, somewhat inexplicably to me, no such threat to the women in Warsaw from any German soldiers, none whatsoever. The behaviour of the two overtaking armies is portrayed quite differently.
