[Note from Moderator: as Bozena says, it is important for members to be able to express their opinions, including about the actions of the Group Moderators. However, we are not actually a democratic entity with voting members, but more like a moderated discussion group with voluntary participation under a set of specified objectives and values, which need to be constantly examined and reinforced through dialogue. In any case, Elzunia and I are reviewing the specific matter under discussion below and we will communicate our decisions shortly. SW]
To those of you who have not been the victim of vicious hate mail, it
is easy to ignore others' (plural) pain and righteously stay above
the fracas leaving the casualties to fend for themselves.
No question but the success of this Group is in a large part due to
Stefan as the Founder and to the Staff he has put together. But our
Moderators will be the first to say that halos are not part of their
persona. And though we all may think the world of them, we have
occasion to disagree with some of their actions or inactions as the
case may be and as members of a democratic Group and not a
totalitarian regime we do have the right to voice our opinions
just as the Moderators have the right to hold us EQUALLY to the rules
and values they set forth. Having said that
Perhaps it is time to review those rules particularly in view of the
recent problems that have surfaced. I would like to address ONLY the
character assassinating hate mail received by members and suggest
When a member transgresses into casting aspersions on another member,
the Moderator/s must step in and withhold that offensive posting.
More importantly, should immediately issue a WARNING to the
transgressor that the behavior displayed is not acceptable and its
continuance will result in that member's dismissal from the Group.
Further, when the Moderator/s are then informed and given proof of
additional, even more obnoxious and assaulting transgressions, that
member should be ousted and not coddled or given a fond adieu as he
departs - particularly when that member does a character
assassination on OTHER members of the Group and ALSO at the Group
itself. I, for one, am not that thick-skinned, as some may be, that
I can ho-hum and ignore deplorable epitaphs.
And that's where I differ with Stefan and unwaveringly stand by my
position that his last email to that member should be removed from
the archives particularly now that an offensive post directed at our
whole Group has been expunged. Since that post was, in Stefan's
words, "extreme offensive behavior", then it follows that his own
post which seemingly condones that behavior should also be removed.
Actions speak louder than words. I don't think we need to worry
about historians checking the flow of our Group's conversations.
And lastly, TO MY SHAME, I chose to stick my head in the sand and
in order to put the painful episode behind, I did not insist several
weeks ago that the aforementioned action be taken. Had I then had
the guts to OPENLY stand up for what I believe, other members in this
Group would have been forewarned and not become wounded recipients of
abhorrent hate mail and character assassination as I had been.
