I am new to the group and also to this process of searching for lost
relatives. However, I thought I would just jump in and see where it
I am searching for information on my Grandfather, Josef
Szwarce, who was last seen putting his 3 young sons (my father and
two uncles) on a train in 1939 from Lvov to Moscow (their oddysey
from there back to the US is another story!). Josef was never heard
from again. They had been living in Lvov since 1937.
Josef was the son of Bronislaw Szwarce who was imprisoned in
Schlusselburg Prison in Russia for seven years and later exiled in
Siberia where he met and was a mentor to Josef Pilsudski. While in
Siberia he married and had three children, one of whom was my
grandfather, Josef. After his wife died in Siberia, Bronislaw was
eventually set free and he returned to Krakow and later to Lvov with
the children. There is (or was) a monument to him somewhere in Lvov.
He died in 1904.
Josef (my grandfather) emigrated to America when he
was 19 and returned to Lvov in 1937 with his three boys, as stated
I am looking for ANY information that anyone may have about Josef
Szwarce and what might have happened to him. Most likely, he was
deported to Siberia along with thousands of others and died there.
It would be amazing if I could find some reference to him.
