      Dear Group:

Here is an article of interest to all of us. The group had just ended
a lengthy discussion of the "Genocide in Eastern Kresy" which was
perpetrated by the those who are to be commemorated.

There is nothing new about some Ukrainians wanting to glorify their
murders of Poles during WWII. But, what is new is that President
Juszczenko is now publicly supporting such commemoration and
rehabilitation of OUN, UPA and its leaders. One might add to this
list Ukrainian SS formations and Ukrainian Auxiliary Police. The SS
and the Auxiliaries were formed from OUN formations which Bandera
handed over to the Germans. Juszczenko in the past has dissociated
himself from those efforts, but now he is showing his true colors.
Apparently, his wife is a daughter of one of the commanders in the
      UPA.

Such brazen open endorsement of UPA-OUN is no different than
glorifying of SS and its leaders such as Himmler and Heindrich
brothers. The "Allies" have been unusually kind to the Ukrainian
collaborators and saved most of the members of the SS-Gallizien (the
last Division to be formed) after the war by declaring them Polish
citizens and "incorporating" them in the II Korps in Italy over
Polish objections and also over objections of the British Commander
of the VIII Army General Alexander and the US Commander of the V
Army, General Mark Clark. Norman Davis called it the "last betrayal
of the Poland" by the allies. Unfortunately more betrayals were yet
      to come.

This is not something that we should accept without a fight. I am not
sure what we can do, but I would like to ask that all of us think
about it and see how this matter could be brought before the Hague
Court and also urge the Polish Government to declare UPA, OUN,
Ukrainain SS and Auxilliaries criminal organizations guilty of
genocide and war crimes. All four groupings were interconnected and
many individuals served in two or three of these formations. The
Polish Government should actively seek extradition of all survivors
of these groups and put them on trial for their crimes against Poles
and Jews. Many of them are still alive in Canada and the US. John
Damianiuk is a good example, but there are many more Damianiuks in
Canada. Successive governments deliberately avoided doing just that.

      With best regards,
      Wladek

Here is my translation of the first paragraph:

"The head of the Council of Lwow Province, Myroslaw Senyk pledged
1000 hrywien from his won pension for building a monument to Stepan
Bandera, the leader of OUN-Banderowcy, and responsible for the
ordering the mass murders of on Polish population in Eastern
Territories of the II Republic (pre-WWII Republic of Poland). The
work of leaders for commemorating UPA murderer, are increasing in
strength and are part of current process to rehatilitate members of
OUN-UPA which is taking place in Ukraine. The Bandera monument is
planed for October 14th, when Ukraine will most likely widely
celebrate the 65th anniversary of the birth of UPA. "

Here is the Article in Polish. I will try to translate the rest of it
      the next two days.

      Pomnik Bandery w Lwowie?
Przewodnicz¹cy Rady Obwodu Lwowskiego (ROL) Myros³aw Senyk przekaza³
z w³asnej pensji 1000 hrywien na rzecz budowy pomnika Stepana
Bandery, dowódcy frakcji OUN-Banderowcy, odpowiedzialnego za wydanie
rozkazu przeprowadzenia na wschodnich terenach II Rzeczypospolitej
masowych mordów na ludnoœci polskiej. Prace lwowskich w³odarzy nad
upamiêtnieniem upowskiego zbrodniarza przybieraj¹ na sile i s¹
czêœci¹ trwaj¹cego na Ukrainie procesu rehabilitacji cz³onków OUN-
UPA. Pomnik Bandery mia³by stan¹æ we Lwowie 14 paŸdziernika, kiedy to
Ukraina zapewne hucznie bêdzie "œwiêtowa³a" 65-lecie powstania UPA.

Podczas sesji rady miejskiej Lwowa jej przewodnicz¹cy apelowa³ do
radnych, aby dofinansowali powstanie monumentu Bandery w takim
zakresie, w jakim mog¹. Wczeœniej, podczas narady z prezesami
gospodarstw rolnych obwodu lwowskiego Senyk zaapelowa³, ¿eby ka¿da
wieœ przekaza³a pieni¹dze na budowê pomnika "s³awnego syna narodu
ukraiñskiego Bandery". Lwowscy radni zebrali ju¿ na ten cel 500 tys.
hrywien, jednak wzniesienie monumentu mo¿e kosztowaæ nawet
kilkadziesi¹t razy wiêcej. Najbardziej liczny na Ukrainie oœrodek
nacjonalistów we Lwowie liczy na wsparcie finansowe od bogatej
diaspory ukraiñskiej w Kanadzie i USA. Z kolei zagraniczni
spadkobiercy OUN-UPA wskazuj¹, ¿e upamiêtnianie upowców powinno byæ
dotowane z bud¿etu pañstwa. Przepychanki finansowe to g³ówna
przyczyna opóŸnieñ w budowie lwowskiego pomnika Bandery. Wola
polityczna, aby monument stan¹³, jest zdecydowana. - Stawianie
pomników ludobójcom z OUN-UPA i inne przedsiêwziêcia tworz¹ce kult
zbrodniczej organizacji oraz rehabilitacja jej cz³onków œwiadcz¹ o
niskim poziomie moralnym elit ukraiñskich i szerokich krêgów
spo³ecznych wspieraj¹cych te akcje, a tak¿e o ich antypolskim
      nastawieniu - zauwa¿a w rozmowie z nami Ewa Siemaszko, autorka prac o
Ju¿ dziœ we Lwowie
byli "wojacy" UPA otrzymuj¹ dodatki do emerytury, dop³aty do czynszów
i korzystaj¹ z bezp³atnych przejazdów komunikacj¹ miejsk¹. - Te
zjawiska powinny ostudziæ zapa³ polskich polityków agituj¹cych za
wprowadzaniem Ukrainy do europejskiej rodziny. Przekonywanie w tej
sytuacji do idei polsko-ukraiñskiego pojednania jest
nieporozumieniem - wskazuje Siemaszko. Inicjatywa w³odarzy Lwowa
wpisuje siê w politykê ukraiñskich nacjonalistów wybielania OUN-UPA i
jej zbrodniczej dzia³alnoœci. Obecnie na Ukrainie upowcy, dziêki
aktywnemu wsparciu prezydenta Wiktora Juszczenki, s¹ powszechnie
gloryfikowani, szczególnie na terenach tzw. Ukrainy Zachodniej.

Terry, I agree with you also. The terror for the Polish people of Kresy must have started right on Sept. 17, 1939 , when Russia invaded Poland from the east.

        Terry,

I agree with you also.  The terror for the Polish people of Kresy must have started right on Sept. 17, 1939 , when Russia invaded Poland from the east.

I’m sure the adults knew right off the bat that hell was on it’s way. The wasted no time at all. And within 3 weeks, all hell broke loose as the Russians imposed a new local regime.

We talk about the horrors of the Siberian deportations and the Siberian imprisonment and the escape via Persia, the UPA butchering of those that were not deported,   etc..  But I can’t imagine the fear they must have endured from Sept 17, 1939 to when the first deportations took place on Feb 10, 1940.

Those 4-5 months of waiting to see what would happen?  What was that like?  What happened in those months as the Russians demanded that all ex soldiers report to the NKVD offices, the order and searches for any weapons, guns rifles ,… the discrimination at the hands of  the locals,  possessions being stolen, confiscated, fearing for the safety of your loved ones, your wife, your children, your old helpless grandparents,,  etc..

What did really happen then ?

        Regards
