For those who are interested reading a great book on the gulags
please try to get a copy of "A WORLD APART by Gustav Herling
Those who have not experienced the gulags will get a detailed
description what went on in the gulags.
The writing is superb and written in such a way that it will take
you body and soul through the thoughts and words of the writer to
almost live the life of a prisoner in the gulags. Winter, summer and
frost on the windows plus looking, living, listening and the
interaction of all in the camps including the authority is described
so intimately that you feel you are right there.
This book should dispel any thought that the gulags were a
recreation place but truly a death camp no different then the
holocaust camps of Germany.
I feel that this book is a must read for those children or
grandchildren whose parents were in the gulags but still refuse to
discuss that topic.
My wife was not able to read this book because the description of
events became too real for her.
