Hello Karin -
Contact your local chapter of the Red Cross where you live. This is
your best bet.
The two names you gave in your post below, is this your father and
his sister or your grandparents? Do you have any documents or
photos? Have you looked to see if your father's name is on the
Evacuation list at our Gallery site? This is the first place to
check. What about your grandfather? Where was he when your
grandmother and her two children were deported? Taken off to who
knows where, I'm sure. Are you sure it was 1939 and not early 1940
when they were deported?
You must have more info to give the Red Cross, such as place of
residence in Poland and your grandparents' names, or at least one of
their names. See what else you can find out first, but I would not
wait too long to contact them. It could be that your aunt was lost
since she was so young, but never give up hope. She may not have
retained her Polish identity and roots, but you never know.
Also there is one search engine you could check in Poland run in
conjuction with Memorial. Go to our Links page. There is also a
list of orphans on the Links page, Outdshorn (sp.). You have a lot
of work ahead. Let's hope that information can be found. Also write
to the Memorial Society in Moscow and the Hoover Institution in
Stanford, California, but they must have a place of residence,
unfortunately, or they cannot conduct a search. Sorry I haven't given
any links, but they are either at the Group's Links page or Gallery.
Hope this helps, and good luck! Let us know if and when you find
