A pleasure to deal with descendants of Orthodox (I'm Orthodox).
The article is interesting, but superficial. And it's not possible in a single article to display full range of conflicts in this matter. One thing is clear - roots of the Greek-Catholics are rooted in the Union of Florence in 1439. After 150 years in Brest was decorated Union with Western Orthodox Catholic (Pope). Greek Catholics, in fact, is now part of Catholic Church, but with Orthodox rites.
I know this question. Coming to Lviv each year (Lviv - capital of Greco-Roman Catholicism), tell and arguing with friends - greek-catholics, always learn something new.
There is a lot of literature on this subject, its would not accommodate any room. One thing can say - as this schism (Greek Catholics out of the pale of the Orthodox Church with clear violations of canons) is for over 400 years, we can not judge whether it was actually - tragedy or salvation of Western Orthodox Slavs who not want lose their autotentichnost (Slav roots).
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at that time (late 16th century) was a very strong country, effectively turning power Orthodox to Catholicism. Orthodox subjects payed tax is 3 times more than Catholics. Therefore, creation of Greek Catholic Church (6 bishops, headed by Metropolitan swore Pope, two bishops refused, considering it a betrayal) was some compromise agreed to Rzeczpospolita.
I would say that all of Greek-catholics bishops cooperated with Nazis in 1941-45. Almost all members of UPA who worked genocide in 1939-45 in western Ukraine, were Greek Catholics (Bandera, etc.). But that's another story.
