The Polish children (both Christian and Jewish) were sent with their families to refugee camps in Africa primarily, but some went to Palestine, India (Valivade), New Zealand (Pahiatua) and Mexico (Santa Rosa).  I am not aware of any ethnic or religious segregation of these children. Please see our links at http://www.aforgottenodyssey.com/links.html#exiles

      2. Where did the 30,000 civilians who  accompanied the Polish soldiers go?
Same answer as #1 – many were children, with their mothers and/or men unable to fight. Jews and Christians were both included.

      3. After General Anders left Russia, where did the Polish soldiers go who were accompanying him?
First to Persia, then shortly afterwards to Iraq, then Palestine for training. A number of his soldiers were Jewish as well as Christian, though the Soviets did not officially allow Jews to leave the USSR with Anders as they were considered Soviet citizens even if they were Polish citizens before the war.

      3. Did they join the British Army or did they have independent units?
The Polish Second Corps was attached to the British 8th Army when it moved to Italy for action against the Germans.

      4. What notable battles were they involved in?
Battle of Monte Cassino, then several pushing the Germans out of Italy as they fought up the peninsula to Bologna.
Several (thousand?) Polish soldiers were also transferred to the Polish Air Force based in Britain, and to the First Corps which fought in the liberation of France (as well as Belgium and Holland?)

        To Dr. Whitman,
I can add to some of the answers as to the Polish children that were taken
out oo the Soviet Union since I was one of them.
We all came out though Iran and since there were more orphan children or only
with one parent, schools were set up in Iran, mainly in Isfahan. Then some
were sent to Africa, India, New Zealand and Mexico (Santa Rosa). From Iran we
went in 1945 to Lebanon. From there is another story.
The books that I suggest for more detailed reading are:
Isfahan City of Polish Children ISBN 09512550 English
Six Years 'till Spring ISBN 0-595-17720-4 (I have written)
Children of Zion (published by Northwestern University Press) I do not know
        the ISBN
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

          -Dr. Whiteman,

          Re your question No. 3
In Dec/41 Polish Army Headquarters were opened in Yangi Yul near
Tashkent, Kazakstan, and 25,000 Polish soldiers were shipped to Libya
to reinforce the Carpathian Brigade. 2000 airmen and sailors were
shipped to Great Britain to reinforce Polish units in UK.
The Carpathian Brigade participated in the battles of Tobruk and El
Alamein. The airmen and sailors participated in the Battle of
Atlantic and defence of British Isles from the German bombers.
The remaining 100,000 formed the 2nd Army Corps and were part of the
8th Army commanded by General Alexander.
          Re your question No. 4
The 2nd Army Corps captured Monte Cassino, Ancona and Bologna in
Italy. Polish Army in Great Britain, including airmen and sailors
transferred from the 2nd Army Corps, captured Pas-De-Calais,
          Chambois, Breda and Wilhelmshaven.

I had three cousins who were children taken to Siberia. They escaped via Iran then were taken to Lebanon, Africa, Mexico then finally to USA. They never mentioned anything about segregating Roman Catholic. Protestant, Jewish, etc. children during their ordeal.  They are still alive.

Thank you for sending me the photo.  What a heart breaking photo.  I have collected some from archives, but yours is one of the saddest I have seen.  I am publishing a children's book in fall which will be called Lonek's Journey; The True Story of a Boy's Escape to Freedom.  It is based on a book I wrote, called Escape via Siberia (Holmes and Meier). Dorit,

You’re welcome, but it is not my picture. This picture is from a book called “Polish Deportees in the Soviet Union” by Michael Hope and the picture is the property of Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum. You may want to ask their permission. This book is non-denominational and it has other Polish children’s pictures in it.

I’ll be looking for your book.

                      This one is:

Polish Deportees in the Soviet Union

$9.95 62 PAGES .  An awesome short book.

                      ISBN 0 948202 76 9

                      Regards

                      ·         Thank you for sending me the photo. (My website is www.doritwhitem.com)  I appreciate your quick reply.  Dorit B. Whiteman
