The Royal Mail has recently gone from 'diabolical' to 'a total waste of
time' so you have my complete sympathy...I am just surprised that it
actually arrived in the Netherlands at all!!
We have no such thing as 'priority mail' it either arrives at some time or
it doesn't, even if it needs a signature. I think that the company is losing
money left, right and centre and employing non-English speaking immigrant
students to deliver or sort the mail...makes a lot of sense I suppose!!
What we do have here is the possibility of re-delivering mail to a local
Post Office for a fee of 50 pence and you can then pick it up at your
convenience, like Saturday for example, but perhaps you do not have this
As far as the Eurovision Song Contest goes I think that most countries tend
to sing in English as it is the most widely used language especially in the
'commercial' music industry. However, I do know exactly what you are
feeling in that Poland seems to be becoming increasingly homogenised...(or
perhaps Westernised) to such an extent that their own cultural uniqueness has
been hidden. The last time we went to Poland it was extremely difficult to buy
any Polish produce such as rye bread, jams etc from supermarkets, most of
the stuff was German and even the shop fronts seemed to have gothic script and
German sounding proprietors. We tried to buy tapes or CDs of Polish folk music
and were virtually, laughed at in the music shops. They tried to sell us the
latest UK stuff instead!
Hopefully we can all play some small part in keeping our culture and
heritage alive, albeit from outside, until people realise that
Westernisation is not all that it's cracked up to be...or could it be
that existing outside of Poland, we may be living in the past or at the
very least, trying to recreate our or our parent's memories?
With kindest regards,
I will never ever order something in the
UK anymore with the exception of Amazon as they give me the possibility of
picking it up in the evenings (but in practice I ask them to send it to my
mother - it is not possible with this Veritas book as I live in postal
district 561 and my mother in 562.
