Group Description

Koha is a full-featured open-source ILS.

Several libraries in Kenya have developed an interest in it over the last 4 years. Efforts to upgrade and customise systems supported by Koha are on-going. However, there is a lack of information and support amidst the libraries within Kenya.

Developed initially in New Zealand by Katipo Communications Ltd and first deployed in January of 2000 for Horowhenua Library Trust, it is currently maintained by a team of software providers and library technology staff from around the globe.

Kenya – Koha is an upcoming network in Kenya that consists of information professionals with an agenda of facilitating and promoting the use of open source software in libraries and information centres in Kenya. The group has taken up the name Kenya - Koha due to special interest in the software. Koha is a true enterprise-class ILS with comprehensive functionality.

The proposed core objective of the group is set a stage that will facilitate sharing of knowledge and support amongst its membership. The establishment of the group was borne out of the obvious need by many upcoming information centres for affordable and quality ILS. The growing worldwide interest in open source systems has propelled the group to pursue an open source alternative as a viable solution to information service centres in Kenya.

Objectives of Kenya - Koha
- To offer support to Koha users in Kenya
- To establish a structure of Koha users
- To promote use of open source ILS
