THIS IS FROM PRES MARC BADEAU FROM THE KIWANIS CLUB OF GORHAM (ME):The results of Operation Holiday Cheer are in for 2008 and they are nothing short of amazing! Operation Holiday Cheer was begun by the newly formed Kiwanis Club of Gorham (ME) in 2007 to provide a holiday gift to the children of military families. OHC distributed over 23,000 gifts throughout New England and New York and raised over $650,000 in donations! Every child in New England that registered for the program was provided a gift. Every gift was individually gift wrapped, included a yellow ribbon and a letter to the child thanking them for their service to their country and noting that the sponsors and people of their state stood proudly beside them during these difficult times. The second indicator of success for the program is the amount of media that was received. Time Warner Cable in ME alone ran over $140,000 of ad time (with over 3,200 spots on over 110 media outlets throughout ME). We received well over 5,000 spots throughout New England and New York regarding OHC with appearances on CBS, NBC, FOX, Time Warner and ABC. This is a great opportunity for Kiwanis to become involved with a program that clearly is being embraced by major corporations and individuals throughout New England and New York. Operation Holiday Cheer would like to thank the 47 Kiwanis clubs in New England that supported the Program and helped to recognize these patriotic and brave children. Many, if not all of you, have probably seen the information released by International regarding events. Thursday evening (6/25) has been set aside for District Outings. Friday evening is the Grand Olde Opry (ticketed event - $40 I believe) and Saturday evening they have arranged an outing at the Wild Horse Saloon (ticketed event - $75 per person).Several months ago we began the process of looking for a location in Nashville that would be fun and affordable (unfortunately this takes lots of planning). We have received a lot of feedback wishing we went back to just our District when planning future outings - although fun, the past 2 years we have “hooked up” with one or more Kiwanis Districts for our event at International. With that in mind, we decided to be pro-active and to get a jump on the competition. Working with Donna Wood Pruitt (Gov Dick’s On To Convention Chair) and some feedback from Carol Ballistrini, arrangements were made to hold our District night out at the Wildhorse Saloon. Never in the world thinking that Kiwanis International would host an event there. Contracts were signed several months ago and we will honor that contract. Exact prices have not been set yet but will most assuredly be less than the $75 for the KI night out. It is all contingent on what buffet we chose. The evening will include entertainment, line dancing, etc. It is very similar to KI’s description. The purpose behind this note is to make you aware that we will be hosting our District outing at the Wildhorse on Thursday evening and to please plan accordingly. Certainly not encouraging you to not attend the KI event, BUT hoping you will decide to join your fellow New Englanders during their night out. Perhaps both evenings are in the cards? Additional information will be forthcoming for the MidWinter Conference.JUNE 27, 2009The Third Annual Keene (NH) Kiwanis Antique Dealers Show and Sale will be at the Keene High School on Arch Street in Keene, NH. Doors will open to the public at 9am and are open till 3pm. There will be a $5.00 entry fee. The first two years have been quite successful and we are expanding the Show and Sale to include up to 50 dealers this year! Questions? Contact Dave Ganio, our Chairperson for the project at <glmgt@...> or (603)357-4561.JULY 14, 2009The Kiwanis Club of Barre (VT) will be having a chicken barbeque at the Barre town Recreation Field.August 3 - 7, 2009The Kiwanis Club of West Hartford (CT) is hosting their 4th Annual “Lose the Training Wheels” bicycle camp in West Hartford, CT. The camp is for children with special needs, ages 8-18 that want to learn to ride a bicycle without training wheels. The camp has been the only one of its kind in New England.Children from divisions around New England have benefited in so many ways, not only by learning to ride but by putting them on an equal level with other kids and increasing their self esteem. Other Kiwanis Clubs can support this effort in a variety of ways. To find out more, please contact Claudia Bowles at <KiwanisWH@...> or call 860-313-0101.
