I want to thank the paddlers who helped me out with information about on the Esopus and Walkill Creek launch sites. Also cheers to:
Ø Marion for coordinating the Great Hudson River Sweep at Sleightsburg Spit, obtaining the grant for the water chestnut harvester for the Town of Esopus Freer Beach, and for obtaining matching funds from the Bruderhof to secure the harvester, and to
Ø Ivan for coming in second in his class at the Wappinger ’s Water Derby.
Paddling activities in the Kingston Area are pretty much SOP despite the economy and some uncertainty and delays. Sadly there have been a few hits: the 4th of July Fireworks over the Rondout haven’t received funding, and Kingston Point Park will only be open to swimmers on the weekends. I also heard that Eric’s shop in Beacon is temporarily (?) closed. However most of Kingston ’s annual events are still in plan:
Ø The Kingston Kayak Festival and Kenco’s demo day will be at Kingston Point Park the second Saturday in June GREAT WAY TO TRY OUT BOATS AND GET A DISCOUNT,
Ø The Forsyth Nature Center at Kingston Point Park resumes their guided kayaking programs May 22 with morning paddles every Saturday morning @ 9 and Sunset/Rondout Paddles Friday & Saturday at 6, plus moonlight and Esopus Creek Paddles. EXCELLENT WAY FOR BEGINNERS AND INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT BOATS TO GET ACQUAINTED WITH THE WATER (845-331-1682 x132 for reservations)
Ø Ulster Marine, under the Rondout RR trestle, will continue to rent kayaks, canoes & row boats (845)339-4364,
Ø Marshal & Dorothy at the River Connection in Hyde Park will continue their Tuesday evening tune-ups and Saturday demo days, and will continue to bring in expert trainers. GREAT WAY TO LEARN EFFICIENT STROKES AN SAFETY TECHNIQUES; SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR PRACTICING WET ENTRIES, BRACES & ROLLS.
Ø Empire Games….???
Ø It was touch and go for awhile, but the Great Hudson River Paddle did get funding. Here is the Tentative Great Hudson River Paddle Schedule. The stops are not all confirmed yet, but the dates and roughly the area they will be in are. So I hope we greet them at Kingston again, and paddle with them along the way.
