Group Description

This is a list for news and announcements from Karibu House.

A LGBT Organization for People of Color

Karibu (pronounced kah-ree-boo) is a Swahili word that means, "Welcome Home." This name was given in a way to set the tone for the Karibu House Multi-Cultural Community Center in Detroit - A place where all people can come to and feel welcomed, "at home."

For so long, Detroit’s LGBT communities of color, that is African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos(as), Asian and Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Middle Easterns, have existed without a central meeting place for its organization and activities. In demonstrating the Kwanzaa principle of Kujichagulia (self-determination), members of these communities that have been underrepresented and historically oppressed, decided to create a safe space for themselves. Karibu House will be an accessible place within the limits of the City of Detroit, where LGBT’s, especially those of color, can feel nurtured, supported, affirmed, and unconditionally accepted.

Karibu House is a 501(C)3 non-profit, multi-service community center that exists to promote the positive mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being and identities for lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, and transgender (LGBT) people of color.
