Group Description

The K9BehavioralGenetics list is dedicated to announcements and discussions related to UCSF's Canine Behavioral Genetics Project. This project, an initiative based in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Hamilton at UCSF, focuses on the relationship between genes and behavior in dogs. Questions, comments, and suggestions related to the project are welcome here. The latest news concerning the project will also be posted when applicable.

This list is focused on project-related discussion. We unfortunately cannot answer behavior questions about specific dogs or give advice here. If you are in need of professional advice, we strongly encourage you to contact a board-certified (ACVB) veterinary behaviorist in your area. Also check out the Links portion of this website for relevant resources.

The owner of this group, Melanie Chang, is a researcher working on the project with Dr. Hamilton's group at UCSF. Melanie has three Border Collies, with whom she trains in herding and agility. Melanie's first Border Collie, Solo, arrived with a slew of behavioral issues related to anxiety and fear, and sparked her interest in the biological basis of behavior in dogs, as well as in serious dog training. Solo, and Melanie's other dogs, have webpages that can be found here: http://canissoloensis.blogspot.com.

For more information, contact Melanie at MelanieC@lppi.ucsf.edu, or consult the project website at http://www.K9BehavioralGenetics.com -- or ask here!
