According to my JD manual, the engine is a B&S 33 which is a single cylinder. So, my disappointment should be with B&S rather than JD. The repair cost was

Usually, you can find craftsman or other brands with the same engine...with "other" problems..like a blown hydro... "won't start" ( 99% of the time gummed

That's a OHV and not OHC engine..that details removing the engine from the rider and totally disassembling the engine...and making sure the broken camshaft did

Just got a call from the JD mechanic. Problem is a broken cam shaft. Mower only has 120 hours on it with annual preseason service. :( Should have it back

Opps..I went by..engine won't start...header...Chances are it's either a valve adjustment thing...weak battery...bad ground/connection or just a weak starter..
