My FF match was the greatgrandson of Yitzhak Kaplan of Grinkiskis.  A FF test might provide partial clarity since the other records are incomplete.

My earliest-known Kaplan ancestor seems to have been Yitzchok (Isaac/Itsko/Itsyk) Kaplan, born in the late 18th century (1790s?).  The 1840 Box Taxpayers list for Ariogala tells us that Abram David, son of Itsyk, ‘resides in Grinkiskis’.  Presumably he actually worked in Ariogala, as the 1844 Box Taxpayers list shows Abram David Kaplan as a ‘day labourer.’

A list of craftsmen in Ariogala from 1852 includes Abram David, son of Itsko Kaplan, aged 43 (born c1809), described as a brick-layer from Krakes (another nearby town, see below) and Eliash, son of Abram David Kaplan, aged 18 (born c1834).

My Kaplan family is listed in Ariogala until the 1880s, when my great grandfather, Levi Kaplan, married his first cousin Leah Fayn of Josvainiai, c1885-86.  They shortly after moved to Glasgow, Scotland, but some of the family lived in Keidan in the late 1880s.

Are you related to the Kaplans of Grinkiskis. If so, we might be third cousins or closer.  I have a third cousin match with a member of the Grinkiskis family. If your branch moved from Grinkiskis to Keidan we might have a closer relationship than Kaplans who remained there.

Having spent the money on the first test, it just seems a lot of money to lay out now without being convinced it would bring results.  Any connections would have to be way back in the 19th century, I reckon.

what makes you think there's a link between our families? - I know that Kaplan and Fayn were quite common names in the revision lists in this area in the 19th century and it's hard to link up a lot of the families

      Harvey,
Yes, that's what you get. It depends on whether genealogical records are complete. For example, Keidan town records are quite incomplete. I doubt if most Keidan families have complete records going back six generations. To quote Donald Rumsfeld, it's a matter of unknown knowns and unknown unknowns. My situation is typical. I have 1300 Family Finder matches with 1000 new matches per year at the current rate--- over 200 second, third and fourth cousins..  In my case none of the names were familiar from my family tree, but I only have decent information on one of my grandparental lines. I doubt if  anyone who tests for  Family Finder  will be familiar with 2300 names, but I could be wrong. By the way our rate will probably be $199.

FTDNA FamilyFinder test offers to 'connect you with relatives descended from any of your ancestral lines from approximately the most recent five to six generations.'

Does that mean connecting you with possible descendants of your great great grandparents etc?  If so, I reckon I know virtually all of the descendants of my Lithuanian great great grandparents.  Am I reading it wrongly?

I don't think we have reached any conclusions as a group.
A couple people have decided on their own to take the FamikyFinder test at FTDNA. You might want to check it out.
So we seem to be. Drifting toward FTDNA. 23andme has yetbo respond to me.
At least, maybe we can fold all our findings into one site amnd see if there are patterns.
