Perhaps members of the forum will be interested in this article which appeared in the Israeli paper "Yediot Aharonot" on 11/3/09.
The government of Lithuania has announced its intention to pay out 41 million dollars to the Jewish community in compensation for properties confiscated by the Nazis and which remained in the hands of the Soviet Republic of Lithuania after the war.  Since its independence the Lithuanian government has returned to the Jewish community synagogues and buildings belonging to the community which were not destroyed during the communist regime.  However , the government holds136 buildings which were confiscated from Jewish ownership and have not been returned for various reasons.  According to a document prepared by the Ministry of Justice in Vilna the first payment will be made on 1st January 2011 and the final payment on 1st March 2021.  The payments will be made annually "according to the financial capabalities of the government" as written in the document.  According to the community's lawyers these figures represent only one third of the actual financial value of the properties and land confiscated from the Jews.  In spite of this the community's spokesman clarifed that "the fact that the state recognises the debt and agreed to pay is far mor e significant that the amount of compensation".
