Glad to see new members at the Keidan Dna Project. This is probably the tip of the iceberg for Keidaner family dna.  Many FTDNA members do not list towns of origin in their background---it is a matter of contacting close matches. A few matches can be found by listing the town of origin under ancestral names, e.g. Ariogala, Kovno, Ukmerge as well as Keidan.

      Harriet,
To sign up just Google : Family Tree DNA   FTDNA.   There are other companies that test, but a number of Keidaners are at FTDNA. There are a number of different tests but many are now choosing Family Finder since it yields more recent matches than other tests. The main problem with FF is that the match could be from your father's side or your mother's side---this problem is being ameliorated to some degree because you now get X chromosome results which indicate if a match is from your mother's side (you could be related on your father's side in addition) On the FTDNA homepage there should be a link for purchasing FF or just search Products. Once you get your results you can join various Projects including a Keidan Dna Project. Hope this answers your question. As I mentioned a few years ago I don't think we are related via the Weinsteins but it is likely that we are at least fourth cousins on another Keidaner line.

Thanks, Josh. Could you summarize this thread of emails and tell those of us who want to get tested exactly what to do?

      Thanks,

A brief update on dna testing. Prices have been lowered at FTDNA. The basic Y (paternal line) and Mtdna (maternal)  tests are now around $60. The autosomal Family Finder (both parents combined) test limited to fairly recent ancestors costs around $100. My Family Finder matches range from second to fifth cousins. I have matches from Keidan as well as nearby towns such as Janova, Ukmerge, Ariogala and Paneveyzh. Getting tested is a personal choice and I am not trying to push anything. However, I have been in contact with a number of people doing genealogical searches who wish their parents or grandparents had been dna tested.

From my own list of dna matches, it appears that more and more Keidaners have been dna tested. Just a reminder that the Keidan Dna Project at FTDNA is open to all with family from Keidan who have taken any dna test. As Howard has noted FTDNA is having a sale until the end of the year.

If anyone is interested in being tested at the project rate,  search for Family Tree DNA. At the site, click 'Products'.

      Dear Group Members,
Howard has done a great job of firming up details with FTDNA.  Our title is the Keidan DNA Project at FTDNA. (Those members who are already with FTDNA can find a section to join projects at the left side of their home page. The Keidan DNA Project is under Dual Geographic projects, K. New FTDNA members can follow the same procedure once they get a home page).
We have obtained standard project discount rates.  Howard endeavored to get lower rates but that is reserved for very high volume. For Family Finder the rate is $219----usual rate $289.  For Y DNA the rate is $129----usual rate is $ 169. To get the discount,  members who are in the process of purchasing a test will come to a Payment Information page. On the page is a question  about coupons. Our coupon number is CMW 2012.  Every few months FTDNA offers sales open to all.  The rates are about $20 lower than our project rates, for example Family Finder is $199. We usually get a few days advance notice of the sale. We will inform Group members as soon as we are notified.

The Keidan DNA Project has been set up at FamilyTreeDNA.com. Josh Weinstein is the co-administrator. Maybe our DNA will show us patterns of relationships that our surnames, adopted in the early 1800s, don't. Bennett Greenspan, founder of FYDNA, says the best he can do for us through the end of the year is: A FamilyFinder program, which looks at both male and female ancestors, for $219. A Y-DNA 37 marker test for $129 to track the male line. Please read the Website for more detail and ask FTDNA any questions. If you decide to order, go through the regular ordering process and upon check out  add the coupon code CMW2012.
