Group Description

This is a group for admirers of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. Though lesser known than Washington, Lincoln, Jackson, Roosevelt, Reagan and others, Polk accomplished an amazing amount in just one term. Some of his achievements are summarized in the last verse of the song by "They Might Be Giants":

"In four short years he met his every goal
He seized the whole southwest from Mexico
Made sure the tariffs fell
And made the English sell
The Oregon territory
He built an independent treasury
Having done all this he sought no second term
But precious few have mourned the passing of
Mister James K. Polk, our eleventh president
Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump."
(Note: to listen to the whole song, go to the Files section of this group.)

An unselfish and dedicated leader, Polk's legacy leaves lessons that modern day leaders can learn from today. Of congress, he said:

"There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress...than I had any conception of, before I became President of the U.S."

History seems to have overlooked this giant. If you feel this to be true and either wish to share information and views about Polk, or wish to learn more about him, feel welcome to join.

Posts will be moderated to keep out spammers and the rude. All others with an honest and courteous opinion should feel welcome.

Please check out the links, photos and files and feel welcome to post a message or start or answer a poll. Thank you for your participation in this group.
