The Cheda Sutras form an important part of the Shvetambara canon.
They are the basis of ascetic self-regulation in the Shvetambara ascetic
community. The Cheda Sutras contain codes of ascetic praxis and
may be described as the constitution of the Shramana religion.

      There are four Cheda Sutras,
      1. Dasha Shrutaskandha
      2. Brhat Kalpa
      3. Vyavahara
      4. Nishitha

The first three are said to be composed by Acarya Bhadrabahu. This book
deals with the first three Cheda Sutras.

      1. Dasha Shrutaskandha
Also known as the Ayaradasha. It has 10 sections, dealing with the code of
conduct for Jain ascetics. One of its sections, the "Paryushana Kalpa" is
popularly known as the "Kalpasutra", and is probably the best-known
Shvetambara canonical work after the Acaranga Sutra because it is read out
      during the Paryushana.

      2. Brhat Kalpa Sutra
Known as the "Kappasuttam" in Prakrit, it is now described as the "Brhat
Kalpa Sutra" in order to not confuse it with the Paryushana Kalpasutra. It
primarily deals with the carefulnesses pertaining to the eshana samiti. It
prescribes eighty dos and don'ts for the correct practise of the eshana
      samiti.

      3. Vyavahara Sutra
This Sutra interprets the practical aspects of the Shramanic code of
      conduct.
It settles disputes and clarifies doubts. It also prescribes the
      purification
process if any faults creep in the conduct of the ascetic.

This book deals with the three Cheda Sutras in a simple and lucid manner.
The Prakrit gathas are quoted, followed by a Hindi and English exposition.
The subject matter is explained with clarity and the print quality is
      excellent.
Beautiful illustrations on art paper make the book attractive and
      self-explanatory.

A great introduction to the wealth of the Agamas!
