The Jamaica Coral Reef Monitoring Network (JCRMN) was launched on June 27, 2003 at the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory (DBML) in Jamaica. JCRMN is aimed at increasing monitoring of coral reefs and associated ecosystems in Jamaica to improve the availability of data and information on the status of coral reefs.

Organizations/institutions represented in JCRMN include:

•The University of the West Indies, Caribbean Coastal Data Centre (CCDC), Centre for Marine Sciences,

•The University Sub-Aqua Club (USAC)

•The Nature Conservancy (TNC),

•Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society (NCRPS),

•Montego Bay Marine Park, (MBMP)

•The Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard,

•The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA),

•The Jamaica Sub-Aqua Club (JSAC),

•The Institute of Jamaica,

•Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to Climate Change (CPACC)/(MACC) Program,

•Caribbean Coastal Area Management (CCAM) Foundation

Since its inception, the JCRMN has acquired funding to conduct training and monitoring at sites around Jamaica and in Haiti. Funding has been received from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the British High Commission in Jamaica and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the United Kingdom (DEFRA).

The network has also organized a number of Reef Check Training workshops in Negril, the Port Royal Cays and Portland. Training is also conducted in the summer but is restricted to students of the University of the West Indies. Individuals trained through the JCRMN form a core group of divers who provide support to future monitoring activities around the island. To date, 38 sites have been surveyed in Jamaica and 5 in Haiti. A total of 67 persons from various locations around the island, including two persons from Haiti have been trained.
