The annual World Championship hockey tournament usually doesn't
produce much interest or much NHL involvement, but the NHL labor
impasse has made just about anything fair game for locked-out NHL
The 16-country tournament, which includes Team USA with Islanders
Rick DiPietro and Mark Parrish, opened this past weekend in Austria
and can be seen via satellite (Canada's TSN) or on the Web
(USAHockey.com). ESPN considered picking up a few games and, telecast
them live during the day, but opted against it.
Certainly talk shows such as "PTI" and "Around the Horn" would draw a
better audience. ESPN might have tried to sell it as a reality show
based on NHL players actually playing hockey. But then, who would
believe such a concept?
