Sound Tigers notebook
His name didn't show up in the box score on the play, but John
Morlang's contributions to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' overtime goal
Monday night illustrate why he's the only tryout position player left
in training camp.
Morlang chased down a dump-in behind the net, got the puck to Barrett
Heisten, then went to the front of the net to set a screen for Chris
"He just got better and better as camp went on," Bridgeport coach
Greg Cronin said. "The bottom line, in training camp, you have got to
create visibility for yourself."
Visibility was a piece of Morlang's decision to sign with Danbury of
the UHL this summer. He spent the last two years playing in Columbus,
Ga., not a place conducive to getting attention from AHL teams.
If Bridgeport doesn't keep Morlang at the start of the regular
season and part of Morlang's survival now comes from a pair of
nagging but apparently non-serious injuries to Kevin Colley and
Blaine Down, making him the 12th healthy forward
he'll go to the Danbury Trashers, a short drive from a dozen AHL
"I know I can play at this level, and I'm hoping to show I can do
that," Morlang said.
Bridgeport released 11 of its 13 tryout players Tuesday, leaving only
Morlang and goalie David Cann.
Down (rib cage) remained out of practice, and Colley (hip flexor)
joined him. It's not supposed to be serious, but it is the same
injury that nagged Colley at the end of the regular season into the
playoffs last season.
Destinations for the Sound Tigers' cuts vary from a few miles upstate
to California. Mike Bayrack and Ivan Curic are set for Danbury, while
Charles Simard heads for Fresno of the ECHL.
Atlantic City of the ECHL picks up the five players it sent here:
Jeff Bateman, Paul Caponigri, Derek Edwardson, Dave Reid and Ben
Wallace. Yale graduate Alex Westlund heads for Charlotte of the ECHL.

Forward Nicolas Laplante is not signed anywhere and could return to
junior for an overage year if he chooses.
Bridgeport has 14 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies still
Keeping Cann while letting Westlund go isn't meant to denigrate
Westlund's training camp performance, Cronin said.
Westlund has a contract in the ECHL with Charlotte, while Cann has
only a tryout agreement with Johnstown of the ECHL.
"Cann has no place to go right now," Cronin said. "He has a
relationship with Sudsie (Maharaj, the New York Islanders'
goaltending coach). We'll keep him active 'til things resolve
Cronin said he apologized to Westlund for playing his presumptive
regular-season tandem, Dieter Kochan and Wade Dubielewicz, instead of
giving the two tryouts another opportunity in Monday night's game.

Congratulations to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the ECHL, who have entered into an affilate agreement with the Islanders and Sound Tigers.
