The Phoenix Coyotes said minority owner Wayne Gretzky is skating to
stay in shape - not to stage a comeback to the NHL.
The Chicago Tribune reported in Thursday's editions that the 41-year-
old Gretzky, the league's leading career scorer, has been preparing
for a possible return.
"Wayne's been skating and playing pickup games this summer, but
that's just to help him stay in shape and feel better," Coyotes
spokesman Rich Nairn said.
Gretzky, who has two herniated discs in his neck, skated during a
summer program for Phoenix's young players last month in Tempe,
Ariz., Nairn said.
Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman had right knee surgery and is
expected to be out until at least December.
Center Ray Ferraro, an 18-year NHL veteran and former Islander, has
retired to work as an ESPN broadcaster.
