Here you have one of the biggest local hockey games in season for
about five years (Devils-Rangers 1997) with big things at skate, and
most papers hardly had more than a few footnotes about it.
Even the two New Jersey papers just are not that into it.
Larry Brooks, continues to hang around the Isles like the grim
reaper, while Evan Grossman, who covered the team (crappy as he did)
all season is in Florida because Brooks cannot bear to watch the
Rangers season end. In so doing he get's to take shots at the Isles
performance and question their chances at making the playoffs.
Larry Brooks is the only writer who called Aucoin and Bates doubtful,
while Newsday and the News called them questionable.
If the Isles clinch a spot, Brooks will be gone quickly. It's almost
a miracle he got on a plane to go see an Islanders game in Washington.
And of course the big story today in NY Sports are two baseball teams
all with new 24 hr networks and not enough programming, with 100+
million dollar payrolls getting ready to slaughter teams that have
1/3 the payroll......Yawn. I really used to like baseball, now they
have owners switching teams and the league running teams because 2/3
of the fans have no reason to think their teams have a prayer.
The next game the Yankees play with any meaning will be around the
time the Isles start their next season in October. The Mets have to
beat out one team. (Atlanta)
Kind of what the Rangers will be like if they buy enough free-agents
At least the Knicks, Giants, and Jets are going to have to earn it.
The Nets earned it and went thru years of losing to get the team that
have now. Knicks cannot buy their way out.
YES: Is the Yankees Network and will be adding the Nets next season
and the Devils eventually. MSG debuts 24 hours today and that is all
built around the Mets and at some point the Knicks, Rangers. No
chance the Garden is going to use it's station to hype the Rangers
The kind of leaves our team with Fox and it's non-programming until
the year 2030.
