ISLAM is often described as a religion that has made a
significant difference in the status of women both
spiritually and legally, recognizing them as
individuals with claims and rights equal but different
from men’s claims and rights. Muslim women today
remain subject to the patriarchal laws of the Islamic
Shari’a as developed by Islamic jurisprudence in the
second century of Islam, but in the twentieth century,
many Muslim regions have attempted to introduce
reforms in the law which affects the status of women.

In the Philippines, the rights of Muslim women have
increased significantly. For some 20 years now, local
Muslim women have assumed on roles that have uplifted
the role of women in nation building, breaking
barriers to reap honors, gaining leadership and wisdom
in their chosen fields, and giving service in the
interest of the Muslim communities to which they
      belong.

The number of Filipino Muslim women earning
distinctions has given them greater determination to
push the boundaries of change aimed at giving them
more opportunities for growth. Many have been given
special awards in recognition of their accomplishments
in business, education, and the arts. In celebration
of Women’s Month, special awards were presented by
      Muslim women’s organizations, non-government
institutions, and government agencies to honor model
Muslim women who have made outstanding contributions
in various fields, including peace, education,
missionary work, charitable causes, and commerce and
      trade.

The Muslim women of the country are involving
themselves more in the complicated task of
disentangling the threads of tribal, Islamic, and
civil law to bring their communities into the 21st
century. They are making headway in a world in which
doctorates, debating, and speaking in international
forums have become ordinary aspects of their lives.
