LONDON: On May 18, a demonstration organized by the
Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Stop the War
Coalition and many Muslim groups attracted more than
A demonstration that consisted of Muslims, Christians,
and Jews heard from many speakers including many
Jewish speakers, who spoke strongly against the
Israeli occupation and made strong statements in
support of the Palestinian struggle.
Among the large list of speakers is the Hyde Park
gathering was Michael Rosen, well known British Jewish
poet, who renounced his "right to return" to Israel,
saying that he'd never belonged there, and who vowed
to the cheering crowd that he would never visit Israel
until Palestine is liberated.
A participant in the demonstration stated, ?Many
Orthodox anti-Zionist Jews were present, and they were
given the pride of place on the platform at Trafalgar
Square, some even carried Palestinian flags! It was
the highlight of the day.?
While there was an obvious police presence at the
demonstration, the atmosphere was calm and hopeful, as
the speakers made their claims, and as the
participants marched through the streets of London.
A young man who said that he came to express his
solidarity with the people of Palestine claimed,
?Support for Palestinians amongst the British
population has steadily been increasing, and more so
during the recent events in the region.?
