PHILADELPHIA — The state Supreme Court rejected the appeal Wednesday of former hippie guru Ira Einhorn's murder conviction.

Einhorn, who spent nearly 17 years on the lam in Europe, is serving a life sentence without parole for the 1977 murder of girlfriend Holly Maddux, of Tyler, Texas.

The former anti-war activist and self-proclaimed futurist was convicted in abstentia in 1993, then granted a new trial after his capture that ended with another conviction in 2002.

The 30-year-old Maddux's mummified body was found in a steamer trunk in the West Philadelphia apartment the couple shared.

Neither Philadelphia prosecutors nor defense lawyer William T. Cannon immediately returned telephone messages left Wednesday.
