Reporters worldwide expected for Einhorn trial
      By THERESA CONROY

As Ira Einhorn sets out his new, conservative court clothes for next week's
trial kickoff, local and national reporters are preparing to claim one of 30
courtroom press seats being reserved by Common Pleas Judge William Mazzola.

Trial participants have said they expect reporters to come in from around
the world to cover the high-profile trial of a runaway peacenik fingered for
      murder.

Also preparing to make another courtroom appearance is the family of murder
victim Holly Maddux. Maddux's three sisters and brother are planning to
attend the trial, an event they hope will end their decades-long fight to
bring their sister's killer to justice.

The last two times the Maddux family was in a Philadelphia courtroom - for
      Einhorn's 1993 absentia trial and the 1999 civil wrongful-death trial - the
former hippie was not in attendance.

The Einhorn retrial, granted to appease the French government during the
fugitive's extradition, is expected to last until the end of October. Jury
      selection will begin Tuesday.

Jurors, who will be sequestered during the trial, will be questioned on
whether the extensive press coverage of the case - which began in 1979 when
Maddux's body was found mummified in a trunk in Einhorn's apartment - would
prevent them from being fair and impartial to the has-been guru.

Press coverage of the Einhorn affair died down a bit while the
self-proclaimed planetary enzyme was on the lam in Europe.

Although some sightings of him were reported in the years following his 1981
bail-jump, Einhorn was not captured until 1997.

The press coverage intensified again after a graying Einhorn, using the name
Eugene Mallon, was discovered living with a Swedish woman in a sweet cottage
      in southern France.

The likes of CNN, Court-TV and an NBC mini-series traced Einhorn's lengthy
extradition process. Dozens of local and national TV news cameras were
trained on a Philadelphia runway last summer when Einhorn's plane touched
      down in Philadelphia
