- I am interested in finding information on Alvin Clayton Dowd,
Daniel Thornton Dowd, Jesse V. Dowd and their families. They were
all the sons of Nathan W. Dowd and Laura Mathena. The brothers
moved to Iowa at the turn of the 20th century.
Alvin Clayton was born in 1860 in Kansas. He married Laura Louisa
Smith about 1886 in Nebraska where he was a farmer. By 1901 he
moved with his family to Sioux City where he became a plasterer. He
and his wife had 8 children that I know of.
Daniel Thornton was born April 17, 1870 in Fairfield IA. He married
Eva Willett on September 30, 1900 in Holt Co. Nebraska. He was a
mail man and later was a bailiff for Judge C. C. Hamilton of Sioux
City. He and Eva had four children. Daniel died unexpectedly in
1926 and Eva moved home with her parents. She died in 1959 and both
are buried in Graceland Park Cemetery.
Jesse V. was born August 1876 in Iowa. He married Della Elkins in
Holt County Nebraska where they had 2 chiildren and moved to Sioux
City where Jesse was a house painter. He and Della divorced and he
remarried to a woman named Emma. Her maiden name is unknown. They
had 3 children. The eldest may have been a stepdaughter.
I would especially like to be able to contact any living members of
The family came to America before 1767, to Chatham County NC. The
first member of the family to come was Connor Dowd. His son was
Owen Dowd and he had a son also named Connor. The first Connor was
a Tory, as was Owen, but the second Connor was a Patriot. After the
Revolutionary war, Connor 2 moved his family to Ohio. There he had
a son William, who had a son Nathan, who was the father of the above
named men. They moved around to Indiana, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.
The above named sons went back to Iowa.
