A while ago, one of my friends, a Greek Orthodox member, asked
curiously about our church. When we live outside India/Kerala, it is
rather difficult to explain our church and the hierarchy, especially
the St. Thomas part although most of the Kerala Christians associate
themselves to St. Thomas. Anyway, later this friend of mine showed me
a home page (Something like www.Indian-Orthodox, I couldn't find it
now) with the pictures of our Barnabas Thirumeni of New York. Then I
found out that there is a home page for our church under our Makarios
Thirumeni of Buffalo (www.malankara.org). I couldn't find any
relation between the two home pages. Now there is another official
web site (www.orthodoxsyrianchurch.org) that has more
content than others. I don't think that this site is managed
seriously because there are many incomplete sections in it (and it
was that way for a long time.)

I think we (?) should come forward and streamline the web presence of
our church. I found a lot of home pages by local parishes, mainly in
the U.S. Some of them are promoting their local priest. Some others
are created by amateurs playing with colors and flashes and with very
limited content. Most of them do not have any relationship to any
other church web sites. I even found a homepage promoting some Casino
      (www.malankaraorthodoxsyrianchurch.homepage.com).

I work in a company where we put lot of information on the web. We
rigorously check the content, consistency, and relevance. But,
unfortunately, the web presence of India Orthodox Church is not good.
Some of the pages do even have spelling mistakes. Can we at least use
the name of our church consistently by all web parties involved?

Can any knowledgeable person explain, what is going on here? Do we
have a direction? Is this how we want our church leadership to expose
the church to the outside world?

        Message 3 of 3 , Nov 15, 2000
I think part of the problem is the fact that our Synod
chose to divide the American Diocese at the time of
Mar Makarios' resignation due to some churches siding
with Mar Makarios. This has cause there to be two
diocese within America, two family conferences, etc.
A lot of unnecessary confusion. Mar Barnabas is the
official Metropolitan of this diocese. It is through
his administration that the church's website be
          developed and maintained. The original
www.indian-orthodox site was well-developed by Renny
Koshy. But, it was never updated after some time. As
you mention, it is a lot of work to maintain a
          website.

But, I think we are moving in the right direction. A
well-developed and actively maintained website is
critical for the purposes of evangelization and
introducing our church and its apostolic history to
the world. We are an apostolic church and should be
          proud of it.

I think Thirumeny needs to make a decision to have one
official diocesan website and all member parishes
should be allowed to have links from the diocesan
site. This will help families that relocate to find a
new church. Mar Makarios' site should be modified to
indicate that he is the Metropolitan of the Canada and
Europe Diocese. Whatever churches wish to ally with
him should be lumped into that diocese.

It is the time for soladarity and oneness in the
          American Diocese!

          Just some of my thoughts.
