Myth, Calumnies of Marie Antoinette: The Austrian Bitch
- "One of the most damaging myths of Marie Antoinette that survives to this day is that she responded to the bread shortages with the callous comment, "Let them eat cake!" We know that this is a complete falsehood that was attributed to her posthumously.
"But in her own lifetime she was the victim of much worse calumnies. Because of her Austrian birth she was distrusted by the French before even setting foot in France. Even her own future husband was opposed to their marriage on the grounds on her nationality. She was looked upon as an Austrian spy and even earned the nickname, "The Austrian Bitch." Soon courtiers were sining little diddies making fun of her. Rumors circulated that was deformed and infirtile.
"After some time and earning enemies at Court, lampoons were being printed with the most horrible and damning of accusations! Orgies, dildos, lesbian affairs, sleeping with soldiers and foreign courtiers, incest, and even child rape! Whole books were printed and spread throughout Europe by those who claimed to have slept with the Queen.
"Nevermind that there was never a shred of evidence for the slightest hint of infidelity on her part; say something enough times and it will be believed.
"This sketch reflects the image of a lecherous monster, fat on the bread of France while peasants starved outside her palace; a grotesque, revolting and deviant creature!
The above is the quote from the artist under his ink drawing of Marie Antoinette by Dennis Budesheim from his blog "Mason Gross Survivor" by Dennis Budesheim.
It was originally posted by Dennis to his blog in June 25, 2011 and is
