Hi, Ms. Mike here (Mimi's mom)...Last week I noticed that Mimi had
not really been eating and at first I wasn't too concerned because I
believed her to be gravid and that's normal for her. But on Friday,
she was in the tub and straining very hard to go and couldn't. So I
took her to the vet. He took an xray and discovered she had swallowed
an open ended staple (I don't even own a stapler!) and sent me to
another specialist who did an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed not
only the staple but a belly full of uncalcified egg follicles. He
told me this was a life threatening condition and sent me to yet a
third vet who examined the prior vets reports and xrays, etc. and
told me Mimi needed surgery as soon as possible. She gave Mimi some
iv fluids and a shot of Baytril and gave me some critical care food
to mix with water and Baytril at home. She contacted a well known
exotic vet surgeon about 2 hrs away (Dr. Laurie Hess at Fine Animal
Hosp in Westchester County) and Dr. Hess agreed to do the surgery on
Monday. When she had Dr. Hess on the phone, she was given a quote of
$2500 to $3000 for the surgery and aftercare. Now, I have already
spent $450 on Friday for these vet visits and have about $500 left in
my account. I spent the entire day yesterday filling out applications
for grant money from different pet organizations but the answers
won't come in time to save Mimi. This is the iguana that I rescued
from Hurricane Katrina just prior to evacuating. If anyone remembers
me, you will know that this little girl is everything to me. I am
going crazy with worry, fear and grief. I don't know what to do. I
need help. Should I go ahead with the surgery even though I don't
have the money and pray that God sends me an answer? Or should I end
her suffering...oh my God, how could I ever do that? What would you
do? I sat up with her for 36 hours because I was afraid she would die
if I went to sleep. I finally had to lay down last night and slept
for 5 hrs and thankfully she is still alive. Her surgery is scheduled
for tomorrow morning at 10:30....please help me to figure this out.
Is there any organization that gives immediate help? They could just
send a donation to the hospital directly. I know I am rambling but I
love this girl with everything I have in me and we have been through
so much together. She is only 5 yrs old and should not have to end
her life now. Please, please someone help me figure this out. Ms.
      Mike and Mimi

        Mike,

The ASPCA couldn't help ASAP, I guess, yes? She made it through
Saturday, and that's good news. I would certainly go ahead with the
surgery. Will they take payments? Or a credit card? Can your
daughter help? Suri had a similar problem with WAY too many egg
follicles. She needed emergency surgery, too, but it didn't include
intestinal surgery (to remove the staple), and so was much less
expensive. She'll make it through the surgery, I have no doubt, and
you wont have to go through gravid periods anymore. I do so wish I
could help, but if I don't have my cataract surgery soon, I will lose
my driver's licence. I know that is not nearly as urgent as saving
Mimi's life, and I know I'm being selfish.

I'm putting this on the list, instead of a private email, because
maybe we can all help. I'm going to send you $25. I know that isn't
much, but maybe other's on here can help a little. Since I can't
even send it 'til tomorrow, it wont get there before the surgery, but
you can promise the vet to give her more. I hope this helps,

        Nancy and the zoo

Nancy, I don't know how to thank you. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't even
have Mimi and all of that stuff from last year was so dumb on my part. It was
me feeling guilty because I had to depend on your kindness to take care of
Mimi until I could get well again. I filled out a bunch of applications to see
if any of the animal welfare groups can help me but it will probably take a
little time to hear back. I also posted on craigs list and have had $270
donated as of this morning. Mimi and I are soulmates and I believe somehow it will
be okay. She is a very sick girl though. I am giving her critical care food,
pedialyte and baytril in a syringe. I have to have her at the hospital at 10
tomorrow and I will let you know how everything goes. The Dr that is doing
her surgery is the president of the American Animal Hospital Association in
NYS. Her name is Dr. Laurie Hess and she comes highly recommended. Thank you
again, Nancy and the best of luck with your own surgery. Please let me know how
it goes. Mike, Mimi and Kirby
