      * PADDY GIBSON, OVERLAND LITERARY JOURNAL:
      STOLEN FUTURES

      - Analysis / Opinion

      Overland Literary Journal: Stolen Futures
      http://overland.org.au/previous-issues/issue-212/feature-paddy-gibson/
      Spring 2013: "The battle to end the Northern Territory
      Intervention is still being fought. While Commonwealth
      legislation continues to mark Aboriginal people as
      second-class citizens, 'solutions' based on punishment and
      control will remain central to the national agenda. ...
      We need to remove the knife and stop the cutting.
      Large-scale removal of children cannot be allowed to stand
      as a 'solution' to the oppression and grinding poverty
      Aboriginal people continue to suffer Australia wide."
      By Paddy Gibson:
      a senior researcher with the Jumbunna Indigeous House of Learning, UTS;
      a founding member of the Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney;
      co-editor of Solidarity magazine

      * CALLUM DENNESS, EUREKA STREET:
      THE ETHICS OF PATERNALISM IN ABORIGINAL POLICY

      - Analysis / Opinion

      Eureka Street: The ethics of paternalism in Aboriginal policy
      http://www.eurekastreet.com.au/article.aspx?aeid=38226
      24 Sep 13: "The ethical question posed in first year arts
      courses is whether the end can ever justify the means;
      whether the deprivation of one's liberty can ever be
      considered an ethical response to a problem. For Aboriginal
      people, the answer to that question can be found in rates
      of abuse and alcoholism which have not reduced despite the
      intervention, or its continuation under Stronger Futures.
      The answer can be found in an adult incarceration rate 14
      times higher than non-Aboriginal adults, and 31 times
      higher among Aboriginal juveniles; a life expectancy gap
      of 11.5 years for males and 9.7 years for females.
      The answer? Paternalism never has, and never will work for
      Aboriginal people." Callum Denness, lives in Melbourne.
      His background is in filmmaking, art and journalism.
      He was awarded Second Prize in the 2013 Margaret Dooley
      Award for Young Writers for the above essay.

      25 Sep 13: "The launch of the film in Australia will consist
      of special screenings at the Museum of Contemporary Art
      (MCA) in Sydney, leading up to 'Australia Day' on 26
      January 2014, followed by a cinema release. Utopia is a
      vast region in northern Australia and home to the oldest
      human presence on earth. "This film is a journey into that
      secret country," says Pilger in Utopia. "It will describe
      not only the uniqueness of the first Australians, but their
      trail of tears and betrayal and resistance - from one
      utopia to another"."

      * MICHELLE TUAHINE, NIRS NEWS
      INTERVIEWS MICHAEL MANSELL AND EVA COX
      ABOUT THE 2013 FEDERAL ELECTION

      - Audio Interviews

      National Indigenous Radio Service 'Weekly News In Review'
      https://www.dropbox.com/s/jqunzi0no8eorjb/WNIR%2027%20September%20MASTER.mp3
      27 Sep 13: "In this week’s edition:
      * Long-time land rights activist, Michael Mansell says we
      have got to create political agenda for ourselves, not wait
      for Tony Abbott to announce our agenda for us. And that
      this week end’s AFL Grand Final, as well as the rugby
      league grand final next week, does little to advance our cause.
      * Some within the labour party have been lamenting that
      they made changes to the sole parent payment.
      * Leading sociologist, Eva Cox says agencies such as ACOSS
      had data to back up the plan wouldn’t work. Ms Cox says
      she’s certain the welfare payment changes lost Labour votes
      at the September 7 federal election.  And now, when Labour
      doesn’t have the power to fix it, the party’s regrets are
      too little, too late.
      * And this weekend, marks the 30th Anniversary of death of
      John Pat, a 16 year old who died in a police cell in
      Roeburne in Western Australia. Social Justice Commissioner,
      Mick Gooda, says 30 years on, there’s still a fair bit of
      racism in the wider community."

      VOTING IS A MATTER OF TRUST

      - Analysis / Opinion

      agendaTracker: Voting is a matter of trust
      http://tracker.org.au/2013/09/voting-is-a-matter-of-trust/
      6 Sep 13: "NATIONAL: For the advancement of Australia’s
      First Peoples the main question in this Federal election is
      who can you trust, asks Jeff McMullen. All of our political
      leaders know this is true, with the Prime Minister Kevin
      Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott declaring that trust
      is the overarching issue around Australia. Yet the major
      parties will have a very hard time convincing Aboriginal
      people and Torres Strait Islanders that there is any
      evidence, any historical pattern of trust that would allow
      voters to pin hopes on promises of change."
      By Dr Jeff McMullen AM,
      one of Australia’s most respected journalists,
      a winner of the UN Media Peace Prize,
      prolific in Aboriginal affairs
