      Greetings to all in 2012:

I hope the new year has been well thusfar.

After a lengthy trip overseas of nearly two months, I have been working
so hard trying to catch up with mail and email, but unable to achieve that.

As I went through old and SPAM emails, I noticed that the email below
sent by Sylvia in September was the last we received from subscribers of this
history group.  The other email we received on December 28, which was an
apology by Amr Al-Abyadh!!    That is it.

Where is everybody?  What happened to Husayn al-Kurdi?

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

      All the best for 2012,

      Dear May/Wafaa',

Many thanks for this message.  I am sorry, I have been silent, but I've been travelling, and, therefore, not been able to keep up with email.

Thank you, Husayn and Robert, for carrying on with this wonderful project.  I am sorry I cannot contribute much, but have learnt much about Iraq's history through reading everything that is posted.  This project provides the base for preserving what is very important to Iraq, something which is difficult to come by today, particularly in light of Iraq's rich history being rewritten.

Thank you all, and especially Wafaa', for all the effort and time you've put into this.

      With best wishes,
      Sylvia

      Dear Subscribers:

This is to announce that Husayn Al-Kurdi has agreed to be the
      moderator of this group.

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten
the September-25 deadline and we thank Husayn for accepting
the responsibility of moderating this group.

Richard will continue being the back-up moderator until September
25 to help ease the transition.

Husayn needs our collective support as a team.

All research papers and articles must be in English or in Arabic
      with its exact English translation.

Please do not forward emails to this group, especially those
that provides no source, that includes other people's comments and/or expose other people's email addresses.  Thank you.

These simple instructions will be repeated by Husayn Al-Kurdy
every once in a while as a reminder.

We welcome Husayn as the moderator and wish him resiliance
      and success.

      Best Regards,
      May Roberts

      Dear Richard and others concerned:

As I told Wafaa, I am ready to help out by providing pertinent materials, but "moderating" probably involves too much computer know-how and I won't get involved in wrangling over side-issues or embroiled in personality conflicts or political pissing contests. I am both too old and too busy with other projects for any of these activities.

If it is a simple matter of monitoring contributions for appropriate and legible content and putting them on a site, I may be able to manage that. If Richard, for example, can cooperate with me then we may get it done together. If there are others who can commit to cooperating and handle some of the tasks at hand, so much the better. The load does not necessarily need to fall on one person.

Also, a certain amount of streamlining would facilitate the smoother functioning of the Group. For example, we should knock off "discussion" threads and confine the Group to posting items of relevance to the subject of Iraq History past and present, without prejudice as to the viewpoint or orientation of the contributors. The only criterion should be clarity of language and coherence of presentation. Also, unless we get some Arabic scholars who are fluent in Arabic (which I am not), then we should restrict it to English language only.

We should definitely not let what could be a valuable and unique resource evaporate into oblivion and I am open to lending the hand I can lend in terms of what I am qualified and able to do personally to keep the Group going and make it better.

I will be glad to reach out to scholars, historians and writers who may be willing to contribute material. I also have direct access to much material which we can post and make available to researchers, scholars and others seeking a reliable source of information about Iraq. We could build quite an impressive reference library in the course of time. That is my vision for what we could and should strive for.

Wafaa has done a terrific job in coming up with the idea and getting the ball rolling. Some of the rest of us need to chip in now and further develop the project which she started and which she kept going in spite of many obstacles, in her characteristically redoubtable fashion.

      Warm Greetings to all,

      Husayn Farag Al-Kurdi

      Dear All:

Before I comment on your recent emils and because I am
relatively busy this week, I ask that you please thoroughly
read Wafaa's email below sent to the group on August 14.

This is also in an effort to remind you, Walaa, to remove the
addresses of those who never made a comment or confirmed
receipt of any email for years.  It is now September 5 and
Wafaa's deadline was August 22.  Though not a military
deadline, it is good to act upon the matter now and remove their addresses.  I assume Wafaa gave you their names and addresses.

      George:

I will be calling you in a couple of days.

      Husayn:

Wafaa phoned you regarding your request to include Iraq's
contemporary history after the occupation and invited you
to participate by sending articles, information or becoming the
moderator of the group.  So I hope that you will make a decision
by the end of September.  Thank you

I appreciate your concerns and encouraging remarks.
Regarding your inquiry, I will call you shortly.

I can not thank you enough for agreeing to be the temporary

Thank you so much, May, for your email and initiative to revive
        this group.

Indeed we never heard from Husayn al-Kurdi.  As a result, I googled his
name and realized that he is a Kurd, whose interest go beyond Iraq
and Palestine to include Libya as he has written numerous articles on the
recent attacks on the Libyan people and leader.

I will send one article related to Iraq written by him once a week hoping
that they provoke healthy discussions as well as elaboration in case of
        ambiguity or errors.

The following is an informative article on the involvement of the CIA
        with the Kurds:

        http://www.bydigi.net/genel-kultur/274374-cia-kurdistan.html

I have one comment on the matter of considering Kurdistan an ancient
country:  People worldwide never referred to Kurdistan as an ancient
country, rather an area or a region. Recently after the occupation of
Iraq, it has been called Iraq's Kurdistan or Iraqi Kurdistan.

Hoping that we hear from everyone in this group including and especially
        Husayn.

        Best Regards
        Rita Cohen-Sharaf

Thank you

Thank you

            Regards,

Dear May, Richard, Rita and George:

I thank you dearly for your help in clarifying, providing

valuable suggestions and helping instructions that finally

led me to the right direction to remove my (this) yahoo

            address from the group list.

I am sorry that you, George, unsubscribed from this group.

Your email today with the instructions regarding the

owner/moderator was greatly appreciated.  Thanks again.

            Dear Misbah, Tariq and Ellen:

Thank you so much for your encouraging remarks.  I appreciate

them a great deal in these hard times I am facing.

            Dear Husayn:

I appreciate your concerns and encouraging remarks.

Regarding your inquiry, I will call you shortly.

            Dear Walaa:

I can not thank you enough for agreeing to be the temporary

moderator until another Iraqi expert or someone interested

in Iraq's history comes forward and agree to moderate this

            group.

Knowing you've agreed to moderate this group until the

end of September, I hope and cross my fingers that an

Iraqi or two come forward to moderate.

            Dear Richard:

I am grateful that you've agreed to be the back-up

moderator with Walaa' also until the end of September.

You both have made my day and freed me from the

responsibility of moderating this group, calling members

on regular bases, reasearching, writing and translating.

This is one very big task to undertake nearly alone for

            six years.

As soon as I email this note, I will delete this yahoo

            address from the group list.

            Dear Others:

This section is to those of you who have been silent

for years.  If you care to follow up or share your feedback

with me, please send your reply to historyofiraq@...

Kindly mention in your private note that you want to be removed

Indeed we never heard from Husayn al-Kurdi.  As a result, I googled his
name and realized that he is a Kurd, whose interest go beyond Iraq
and Palestine to include Libya as he has written numerous articles on the
recent attacks on the Libyan people and leader.

I will send one article related to Iraq written by him once a week hoping
that they provoke healthy discussions as well as elaboration in case of

The following is an informative article on the involvement of the CIA

I have one comment on the matter of considering Kurdistan an ancient
country:  People worldwide never referred to Kurdistan as an ancient
country, rather an area or a region. Recently after the occupation of
Iraq, it has been called Iraq's Kurdistan or Iraqi Kurdistan.

Before I comment on your recent emils and because I am

relatively busy this week, I ask that you please thoroughly

read Wafaa's email below sent to the group on August 14.

This is also in an effort to remind you, Walaa, to remove the

addresses of those who never made a comment or confirmed

receipt of any email for years.  It is now September 5 and

Wafaa's deadline was August 22.  Though not a military

deadline, it is good to act upon the matter now and remove their addresses.  I assume Wafaa gave you their names and addresses.

              Husayn:

Wafaa phoned you regarding your request to include Iraq's

contemporary history after the occupation and invited you

to participate by sending articles, information or becoming the

moderator of the group.  So I hope that you will make a decision

by the end of September.  Thank you

Dear May, Richard, Rita and George:

I thank you dearly for your help in clarifying, providing

valuable suggestions and helping instructions that finally

led me to the right direction to remove my (this) yahoo

Thank you all and good night,

Indeed we never heard from Husayn al-Kurdi.  As a result, I googled his
name and realized that he is a Kurd, whose interest go beyond Iraq
and Palestine to include Libya as he has written numerous articles on the
recent attacks on the Libyan people and leader.

I will send one article related to Iraq written by him once a week hoping
that they provoke healthy discussions as well as elaboration in case of
                  ambiguity or errors.

The following is an informative article on the involvement of the CIA

I have one comment on the matter of considering Kurdistan an ancient
country:  People worldwide never referred to Kurdistan as an ancient
country, rather an area or a region. Recently after the occupation of
Iraq, it has been called Iraq's Kurdistan or Iraqi Kurdistan.

Hoping that we hear from everyone in this group including and especially
                  Husayn.

                  With best wishes,

                  moderator of this group.

Thank you

                  Regards,

Dear May, Richard, Rita and George:

I thank you dearly for your help in clarifying, providing

valuable suggestions and helping instructions that finally

led me to the right direction to remove my (this) yahoo

                    Dear May:

Now that I responded to your email below by providing two of Husayn al-Kurdi's articles,
I have decided and for the following reasons to unsubscribe from this group:

                    1. There is a lack of interest among subscribers of this group to exchange information
and discuss matters related to Iraq history.

                    2. This group has no moderator.

                    3.  I spent hours searching and sending emails about Husayn al-Kurdi and Iraqi Kurds, yet
they all (except for Ellen and Walaa) seem not interested, added to the fact that we did
                    not hear from Husayn himself!!!.

Where are the Iraqis in this group, especially those who thought they knew more
than Wafaa and can do better work than hers and so constantly challenged or ignored her?

I want to thank Walaa and Ellen for acknowledging my emails and for commenting and/or
forwarding the articles-n-discussion to their list.

Please remove my address from this group list.  Thank you.

                    Wishing You All the Best,
                    Rita

                    With best wishes,
                    Sylvia

Thank you

                    Regards,

Dear May, Richard, Rita and George:

I thank you dearly for your help in clarifying, providing
valuable suggestions and helping instructions that finally
led me to the right direction to remove my (this) yahoo

I am sorry that you, George, unsubscribed from this group.
Your email today with the instructions regarding the

                    Dear Misbah, Tariq and Ellen:

them a great deal in these hard times I am facing.

                      Dear May:

After you initiated your first email to this group on February 13, I received an email from
Husayn Al-Kurdi dated February 14.  Unfortunately, I just found it in the SPAM folder
                      today.

I thank you for initiating the email reminder.

                      Dear Rita:

I understand very well your disappointment.  But I hope that you receive
my reply and other subscribers' replies before you unsubscribe.  It is unfortunate that
your and Wafaa's friend, George Michael, unsubscribed last year from this group.  So removing
your address would be another considerable loss for us.

I did not understand why Husayn sent his February 14 email only to me rather than to this
group's list because it was an informative article commemorating the Amiriyah Shelter's bloody
event in 1991 by documenting the names of all those who were killed!  Wafaa used to do
these kinds of political, war and art-related commemorations on-line.  The following was one of many
commemorations posted by Wafaa: http://iraqshistory.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html about
a tragic event that took place in 1993.

Here is the documentation of al-Amiriya Shelter's event sent by Husayn:

I have not spoken with Wafaa since late January and will phone her shortly,
but I encourage you and other friends from this group to phone her and suggest
that she posts the article above on the Iraq History blog.  By this I don't mean that
we pressure her, but simply show solidarity and interest.

                      With best wishes,
                      Sylvia

This is to announce that Husayn Al-Kurdi has agreed to be the
                      moderator of this group.

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten

Thank you

Your email today with the instructions regarding the

Knowing you've agreed to moderate this group until the
end of September, I hope and cross my fingers that an
Iraqi or two come forward to moderate.

                        Dear Iraq History Group members:

Apparently, several e-mails I sent out re: the Group never reached their destinations.

I have been gathering much material for IHG, focusing on what happened to and in Iraq in the period 1979-2003. I have much material on Saddam and on historical events in this period. I will be assembling the mass of material on Saddam to begin with.

Please send me any material which may be of interest so I may review it. If any of you want to help in reviewing material, please do so. Please give your suggestions and we may discuss them on-line as a group.

I would like to start issuing newsletters and send them to our group and re-circulate them
as widely as is feasible. Past newsletters have been very effective in style and content.

Finally, I would like to call your attention to two web-sites: Iraq-Palestine Committee (which features some recent articles by myself) and "LEARN" (Liberation Education Action Research Network, a web-site run by my wife), as well as "Malcom Lagauche", who is my colleague Jeff Archer, the man who wrote the only good English-language book on the war against Iraq, "The Mother of all Battles".

I will give more extensive information about myself as we go along. My mother was Bahia Farag (Farajullah), who ran a cultural-literary salon in Baghdad in the 1940s after a brilliant career as a student prodigy and women's leader in Cairo as a protege of Huda al-Shaarawi. My father was an American professor and scholar from California who was a faithful servant of America and with whom I had an adversarial political relationship, being on the other side from an early age More later, if there is an interest in the subject. I am working on my parents' biography.

Hoping to hear from you all soon.
I thought that the group had disbanded after my appointment as director!
Now we can get the ball rolling again.

                        Warm Greetings,

                        Husayn Al-Kurdi

                        Richard

                        All the best for 2012,
                        May Roberts

Before I comment on your recent emils and because I am
relatively busy this week, I ask that you please thoroughly
read Wafaa's email below sent to the group on August 14.

This is also in an effort to remind you, Walaa, to remove the
addresses of those who never made a comment or confirmed
receipt of any email for years.  It is now September 5 and
Wafaa's deadline was August 22.  Though not a military
deadline, it is good to act upon the matter now and remove their addresses.  I assume Wafaa gave you their names and addresses.

contemporary history after the occupation and invited you
to participate by sending articles, information or becoming the

I spoke with Wafaa today; she is not well.  Her blood pressure has been
very high since she returned from IRAQ.  Since February 23, Wafaa has

Last year (2011) has been a bad year for Wafaa during which she
left for Iraq twice and stayed longer than usual.  These two trips have been
dramatic, caused her several problems and affected her health.

So in terms of posting on the Iraq History blog, we should wait until she
feels better and ready to take the task.

                          Best Regards,
                          May Roberts

                          Dear May:

After you initiated your first email to this group on February 13, I received an email from Husayn Al-Kurdi dated February 14.  Unfortunately, I just found it in the SPAM folder today.

                          Richard

Thank you.

                          Wishing You All the Best,
                          Rita

                          With best wishes,
                          Sylvia

This is to announce that Husayn Al-Kurdi has agreed to be the
                          moderator of this group.

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten
the September-25 deadline and we thank Husayn for accepting
the responsibility of moderating this group.

Richard will continue being the back-up moderator until September
25 to help ease the transition.

Husayn needs our collective support as a team.

Wafaa's deadline was August 22.  Though not a military
deadline, it is good to act upon the matter now and remove their addresses.  I assume Wafaa gave you their names and addresses.

You both have made my day and freed me from the
responsibility of moderating this group, calling members
on regular bases, reasearching, writing and translating.

Greetings and thank you, Husayn, for your email and information.

Your mother's history in Baghdad highly interested Wafaa'
and was waiting for your material for months, but never received them.
Perhaps now you have a better chance to shed some light on those
                            days by writing the biography.

I just want to make a minor correction, which is that you are the
moderator, not the director, of this group.

My father was an American professor and scholar from California who was a faithful servant of America and with whom I had an adversarial political relationship, being on the other side from an early age. More later, if there is an interest in the subject. I am working on my parents' biography.

Hoping to hear from you all soon.
I thought that the group had disbanded after my appointment as director!
Now we can get the ball rolling again.

                            Warm Greetings,

                            Husayn Al-Kurdi

                            Richard

Thank you.

                            Wishing You All the Best,
                            Rita

                            With best wishes,
                            Sylvia

                            moderator of this group.

Thank you

                            Regards,

                              Dear Richard & May:

Thank you both for your emails and info.

I just skyped Wafaa and we talked for a while. I did not mention
about updating the Iraq History blog because I focused on her
health, Iraq trip and all that I can say to lift her up.

I think that you both and Husayn Al-Kurdi should relate to her the matter
about updating the history blog http://iraqshistory.blogspot.com

May and Husayn:  As owner/moderator, please include this
blog under your name whenever you send an email to the group.

                              All the Best,

                              Dear Richard:

So good to hear from you.  Thanks so much for your email and information.

I spoke with Wafaa today; she is not well.  Her blood pressure has been
very high since she returned from IRAQ.  Since February 23, Wafaa has
been hospitalized twice, so I too think phoning her regularly by
us (our history group whom she spent more than five years to inform and support)
would do good in terms of uplifting and solidarity.  She can be reached at:

SKYPE ID: INEAS_Cambridge   (She uses it daily)
                              Tel: (617) 864-6327
Cell: you know it, but try not to phone her at it, send only sms please.

I include the contact info. above for other subscribers as well.

                              Dear May:

After you initiated your first email to this group on February 13, I received an email from Husayn Al-Kurdi dated February 14.  Unfortunately, I just found it in the SPAM folder today.

Here is the documentation of al-Amiriya Shelter's event sent by Husayn:

                              http://www.al-moharer.net/mohhtm/al_amiriya_shelter_we_never_forget290.htm

I have not spoken with Wafaa since late January and will phone her shortly,
but I encourage you and other friends from this group to phone her and suggest
that she posts the article above on the Iraq History blog.  By this I don't mean that
we pressure her, but simply show solidarity and interest.

                              Richard

Thank you.

                              Wishing You All the Best,
                              Rita

                              With best wishes,
                              Sylvia

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten
the September-25 deadline and we thank Husayn for accepting
the responsibility of moderating this group.

                              Husayn:

Wafaa phoned you regarding your request to include Iraq's
contemporary history after the occupation and invited you
to participate by sending articles, information or becoming the
moderator of the group.  So I hope that you will make a decision
by the end of September.  Thank you

I thank you dearly for your help in clarifying, providing
valuable suggestions and helping instructions that finally
led me to the right direction to remove my (this) yahoo

Thank you so much for your encouraging remarks.  I appreciate
them a great deal in these hard times I am facing.

I can not thank you enough for agreeing to be the temporary
moderator until another Iraqi expert or someone interested
in Iraq's history comes forward and agree to moderate this

Knowing you've agreed to moderate this group until the
end of September, I hope and cross my fingers that an
Iraqi or two come forward to moderate.

                                Dear Richard & May:

Thank you both for your emails and info.

I just skyped Wafaa and we talked for a while. I did not mention
about updating the Iraq History blog because I focused on her
health, Iraq trip and all that I can say to lift her up.

I think that you both and Husayn Al-Kurdi should relate to her the matter about updating the history blog http://iraqshistory.blogspot.com

May and Husayn:  As owner/moderator, please include this
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IRAQHistory/ and the Iraq History blog under your name whenever you send an email to the group.

                                All the Best,
                                Walaa Ali

Here is the documentation of al-Amiriya Shelter's event sent by Husayn:

                                http://www.al-moharer.net/mohhtm/al_amiriya_shelter_we_never_forget290.htm

I have not spoken with Wafaa since late January and will phone her shortly,
but I encourage you and other friends from this group to phone her and suggest
that she posts the article above on the Iraq History blog.  By this I don't mean that
we pressure her, but simply show solidarity and interest.

                                Richard

Thank you.

                                Wishing You All the Best,
                                Rita

so hard trying to catch up with mail and email, but unable to achieve that.

                                With best wishes,
                                Sylvia

This is to announce that Husayn Al-Kurdi has agreed to be the
                                moderator of this group.

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten
the September-25 deadline and we thank Husayn for accepting
the responsibility of moderating this group.

Richard will continue being the back-up moderator until September
25 to help ease the transition.

Husayn needs our collective support as a team.

These simple instructions will be repeated by Husayn Al-Kurdy
every once in a while as a reminder.

Before I comment on your recent emils and because I am
relatively busy this week, I ask that you please thoroughly
read Wafaa's email below sent to the group on August 14.

This is also in an effort to remind you, Walaa, to remove the
addresses of those who never made a comment or confirmed
receipt of any email for years.  It is now September 5 and
Wafaa's deadline was August 22.  Though not a military
deadline, it is good to act upon the matter now and remove their addresses.  I assume Wafaa gave you their names and addresses.

Thank you

After reading Husayn's email sent two days ago, I feel now clearer
and more determined about my decision to unsubscribe from this group list.

The way I feel with this history group is similar to what Wafaa has been
feeling concerning her writing activities on Internt.  Today, she posted
an interesting finale with a clarifying note below her signature.

                                  Richard

Thank you.

                                  Wishing You All the Best,
                                  Rita

                                  With best wishes,
                                  Sylvia

                                  Husayn Farag Al-Kurdi

relatively busy this week, I ask that you please thoroughly
read Wafaa's email below sent to the group on August 14.

                                    Dear Husayan,
Thank you for your message. I'll do my best to help you. To be frank, I suggest that we should focus on the positive achievements during the period of 1968 (instead of 1979) until 2003, because every body is fed up with all  what have been said negatively on that period and we don't need to read that  again. Also the positive acheivements were totally ignored by the main stream media, Western politician and writers...Regards

                                    Richard

Thank you.
                                    Wishing You All the Best,
                                    Rita

I hope the new year has been well thusfar.

After a lengthy trip overseas of nearly two months, I have been working
so hard trying to catch up with mail and email, but unable to achieve that.

As I went through old and SPAM emails, I noticed that the email below
sent by Sylvia in September was the last we received from subscribers of this
history group.  The other email we received on December 28, which was an
apology by Amr Al-Abyadh!!    That is it.

Where is everybody?  What happened to Husayn al-Kurdi?

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

                                    With best wishes,
                                    Sylvia

                                      Dear May, Richard, Husayn, Wafaa',

Many thanks for all your messages - my apologies for the rather long silence which has been due to unavoidable circumstances.  Wafaa', I will call you soon, and wish you a speedy recovery. I am aware of all the stress you've been under.

While I don't always contribute towards this group, I do read all the exchanges which help to increase my knowledge on the history of Iraq - thank you, all.

Thank you, too, Husayn, for offering to share all the information you have on Iraq. 'The Mother of all Battles' makes superb reading, which I would also highly recommend.

                                      Warmest wishes,
                                      Sylvia

                                      Richard

Thank you.

                                      Wishing You All the Best,
                                      Rita

                                      With best wishes,
                                      Sylvia

This is to announce that Husayn Al-Kurdi has agreed to be the
                                      moderator of this group.

Wafaa phoned him tonight and informed me of his decision.

Today is September 14 and so the good news is that we've beaten
the September-25 deadline and we thank Husayn for accepting
the responsibility of moderating this group.

Richard will continue being the back-up moderator until September
