The Historic Preservation Agency has taken budget cuts for a number of years. The Agency was looking at a deep cut in the coming fiscal year. However, the agreement between the Quinn Administration and AFSCME has somewhat alleviated the immediate threat to the HPA and its Sites. Still HPA's ability to hire a sufficient number of desperately needed seasonal workers is in question. And no one can predict how HPA's budget may be impacted come July 1, 2011.
Governor Quinn is encouraging Illinoisans to review his proposed budget and propose budget solutions especially solutions that might bring new revenue to the State.

During these tough times we can take heart in the fact that Governor Quinn reopened closed sites last Spring and recognized the importance of history-based tourism in his State of the State address several weeks ago.
Now is the time to comment on how historic sites and museums are currently contributing to your community's tax base and to suggest ways that even more tourism dollars might be generated. Building revenue is critical to the HPA's ability to share the rich heritage of the Praire State with future generations.
