      Dear Friend,

Scholars/BMO Harris Attend Alvin Ailey Performance
BMO Harris staff, Affinity scholars, and other young people who attend Affinity programming had a night on the town Saturday, March 16th. They started with dinner and lively conversation at the Artist's Café, followed by the Alvin Ailey performance at the Auditorium Theatre. This activity is one of many that will take place throughout the year due to our new partnership with BMO Harris' Lion's Pride LGBT group.
Affinity Seniors Host Health Insurance Workshop

The Affinity Senior Group organized a very informative workshop that provided a detailed overview of the Affordable Care Act and Medicare. Joni Castleman, Community Relations Specialist, for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, led the presentation and answered questions. She also provided information packets for the group with additional resources. The Chicago Urban League generously provided space for the workshop. This was the first in a series of Aging & Retirement Resource workshops that will be held throughout the year. The Senior Group meets the 3rd Saturday of the month at Affinity's office, 1424-28 E. 53rd St, Suite 306, Chicago, IL.

Coalition Meets with Rep. Jan Schakowsky

Members of the LGBTQ Immigration Rights Coalition of Chicago met with Representative Jan Schakowsky this week to ask her to continue to push for inclusion of LGBT concerns in immigration reform legislation. Affinity has been a member of the coalition since 2011. Luis Ramon, a coalition member, has a very eloquent piece in this week's Windy City Times that illustrates the intersection of LGBT and immigration concerns.

      Congratulations to Joy Messinger

Joy Messinger, Affinity supporter and Building Bridges Advisory Council member, is being honored with the Civic Engagement, Community Service, and Community Organizing Award from the Women & Gender Studies Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The award is given to UIC alumnae engaged in social justice and community work. Joy is the manager of sexual health education at the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health and in her spare time is an active member of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, Invisible to Invincible, Asian Pacific Islander Pride of Chicago, and the Chicago Foundation for Women Lesbian Leadership Council. She is also a birth dula. Congrats, Joy!

Janet Mock Featured on MHP Show

This past Sunday, Janet Mock, a trans woman of color who is a writer and activist, was a panelist on the Melissa Harris-Perry Show talking about LGBTQ movements, intersections of issues, and how it is important that mainstream LGBTQ organizations move beyond marriage equality and address issues like health care, employment discrimination, racism, and other issues that disproportionately impact queer and transgender people of color. You can catch the discussion here.
